Trying to take photos of the partial eclipse through my home made cereal box viewer didn't go too well. Except when I accidentally flicked it into selfie mode and captured this, I'm guessing the reflection from my phone screen or the tin foil on my forehead.

Some photos from my glorious day out in Eryri climbing Y Garn. I'm so out of practice, was really puffing by the top and my knees did not enjoy the descent. Fantastic views though, such a great way to spend my day!

I find myself almost daily recommending "Fire Weather" by @johnvaillant.bsky.social to people. A terrifying and insightful read, superbly researched and sympathetically peopled. It was already a book which has stuck with me, but its more evident than ever that we live in a fire world.

Got a new laptop temporarily from work whilst my old one gets a refit. Which agent of chaos made the power button a keyboard key and put it within easy typo range of backspace and delete?!

Seven bushels of wheat in a glass fronted case, they are of different heights corresponding to the type of fertiliser used, effectively presenting an organic bar chart. They are in an exhibit at the Science Museum's 2025-26 free exhibition "Future of Food". The exhibit group label says "The Chemistry of Farming". A facsimile of a 19th century newspaper lies in front of the case.

Great to hear Kamasi Washington on @cerysmatthews.bsky.social 6Music this morning and then see him and his amazing band at the Royal Festival Hall in a tribute to Jazz Legends: the centenary of Miles & Coltrane, the passing of Sonny. He blended their music together into astonishing breathless jams!

Honestly, @naomiaklein.bsky.social's "Doppelganger" (the 2024, and inaugural, winner of the same prize) was one of the best books I read that year so @womensprize.bsky.social are really smashing it. Can't wait to see who gets this year's gong!

I am about a year behind, as this year's winner is being announced on 11 June, but I just started @drrachelclarke.com's "The Story of a Heart", the 2025 @womensprize.bsky.social for Non-Fiction winner, and it is astonishing moving and superbly written. Choked a sob more than once.

One of the star objects of the visit was the Lady of Elche, a 4th century BC sculpture found in 1897 in Alicante now on display at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. Is she a piece of a larger statue? Who does she represent? Whatever the answer she is beautiful and unlike anything I've seen before.

I am lucky enough to travel for work a fair bit, but I haven't traveled for a real holiday in a long time! So, took myself off to Madrid for a weekend where it was unseasonably wet and cold, but compensated by hunting Cervantes and visiting plenty of cafes, bars, galleries and museums.

This case with doors and 30 drawers contains the rods and strips of two calculating machines invented by the Scottish mathematician John Napier. The machine known as “Napier's bones”, comprising 60 numbered rods, was the most popular calculating device in the Early Modern Era. The second machine is a promptuary and consists of nearly 300 flat rods and strips, all with numbers and perforations. It was used for performing fast multiplications.

Final day in Samarkand and in Uzbekistan. We visited mausoleums, mosques, bazaars, archeological sites and museums, and a traditional paper-making factory. I'm footsore, slightly sunburned, and completely dazed from all the beautiful sights.
