From one bin face to another I wish Count Binface all the best for tomorrow’s byelection. 😄 Fans of a certain gothic video game - ahem - MediEvil - have long memories of me recording the dialogue for Sir Daniel Fortesque by wearing a bin on my head back in 1997. 😄
Saw Nolan’s “Odyssey” at the BFI Southbank concert n the giant 70mm print and aspect ratio. I had some niggles but overall I had a good time with the film. As for those complaints (clicks) about accuracy to text (blah blah) many beloved film adaptations are very different from their source texts.
Awesome Brighton day with The Flaming Lips followed by Nic Cave and Kylie. Fruity sunshine vibes meet the Lord of Preacher Goth.
There is even a moment in the film in which the apartment block that I was staying in at the time collapses and falls onto Godzilla’s head which never fails to bring a smile to my face when I rewatch the film! The film went on to win many important awards in Japan. Happy mutating 10th anniversary!
The creature is designed to resemble a burning mushroom cloud of radiation in its near-final form - building on the premise of the ‘54 original but pushing the motif further. This week is the 10th anniversary of Shin Godzilla. Seeing all the hype in Japan back in 2016, I was so excited to see it!
There are many monster films that I love. Shin Godzilla is still the most unique/politically layered creature film released in the past ten years. A constantly mutating creature that reflected Japan’s slow bureaucratic response to the escalating Fukushima disaster was a contemporary masterstroke.
Those old 60s shows also had the coolest theme songs and music. 😎🔥
A lazy heatwave morning and breakfast in the company of Ultraman. 1960s Japan is just so full of cool and one of my go to happy places.
Speaking of old school… I often need to go outside to gather reference, write in my notebook. So, yesterday I visited a local church for ideas for a church setting. And was amazed to hear the cracking of shifting wooden roof beams due to the heatwave - the wood had absorbed so much energy! Listen!
It was also further enhanced by visiting the many amazing puppets, models and sets earlier this year at the exhibition.
I revisited Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” last night for the first time in many years. Like many of Anderson’s film I was a bit mixed on it the first time round, but this time it really clicked with me and I had a great time with it. So many nice little details in the film. A joy.
Such a lush treat for the eyes compared to films today that have that flattened murky midrange appearance. I wonder if the film had an influence on Svankmajer? Several moments feature stop motion taxidermy animals. Really looking forward to Eureka’s upcoming boxset of German DEFA folk tale films.
Film watching today. Has anyone seen any of the DEFA made (then) East German folk tale films? “Heart of Stone” is so beautifully shot. A Faustian tale set in the Black Forest. The film used Agfacolor film stock, an early German color process. Kinda reminded me of looking through an early ViewMaster.
One story features a Mexican wrestler in the ring of life with a tussle with death itself! Featuring Ott’s wonderful scratch board style art and no dialogue - the stories flow like silent film noir. 💀
Fuck yeah! The heatwave has abated! Time for breakfast outdoors… coffee, toast and a copy of the latest Thomas Ott book. Bliss! “Panopticum” in which a girl visits a creepy cinema slot machine tent at a circus/freak show to witness an anthology of creepy twisted silent film madness.
Those cat soups that you can put in the fridge are a life saver! 😄 Hobbes and Leonard will be happy to discover it’ll be back to normal next week - phew!
Having to brush Leonard (the cat) every other day as being a shaggy long haired cat in this heat wave is no fun. Just look at this amount of fur during one brushing session - poor mog! Then to keep him cool he gets to wade about in a few inches of cool water.
Writing and designing puzzles during a heatwave with no air con for a videogame set during a bitter frozen winter in the North of England is certainly a challenge! 😄🫠🔥❄️
Here’s a little model diorama that I made to promote an event many years ago. Such fun. When the game is nearing a playable demo stage I look forward to hopefully attending new events in person. It will have a hand drawn aesthetic so I hope to have physical art related goodies on offer.
But there was something fun about the nerves and the pressure of tabling in public. It’s such fun to chat in person and make new friends. Of course, I was terrible as I would happily just chat instead of selling! 😄 And I also got to meet/neigbour with other artists/writers that I was a fan of.
Three years to the day since I lasted guested at a tabled comic con/book fair or signing event. Then there was the covid gap years. I kind of miss meeting and chatting in person to new and old people. However, i’ll not miss the pressure of drawing quickly in public - never enjoyed that! 😄
After playing a little on the Switch 2 on my big telly I wish that the devs had implemented all the display options found in the PC/Mac version - analogue cathode scan lines, screen blur etc.
It was a very hot day today! There was only one thing for it! 🫠 🥂 🧀 🕶️
Adore this film and its sense of otherworldly wonders and brutality. Probably how pets see us as they try to comprehend our strange ways - as both masters and abusers. Also worth finding the wonderful Rene Laloux art of book too (France).
Who here is looking forward to the season finale of “Widow’s Bay” this week?
