I failed to view the DHS funding vote as a referendum on the illegal and immoral conduct of ICE in Minneapolis. I hear the anger from my constituents, and I take responsibility for that. I have long been critical of ICE’s unlawful behavior and I must do a better job demonstrating that.
The senseless and tragic murder of Alex Pretti underscores what happens when untrained federal agents operate without accountability. President Trump must immediately end “Operation Metro Surge” and ICE’s occupation of Minneapolis that has sown chaos, led to tragedy, and undermined experienced local law enforcement.

There is no training that will prevent them from dragging disabled women from cars, using children as bait, calling their murder victim a “fu**ing b*t*h,” and clapping at a murder and counting their bullet holes. They are under orders from the top to act immorally and to ignore the constitution. Call for Noem’s impeachment and the dissolution of ICE patrols until investigations into these murders and unlawful arrests are completed. Deportation operations can continue but only with cooperation, as in the past, with local law enforcement and under strict supervision from NGOs to ensure constitutional rights are protected.

Suozzi says Democrats lost votes for supporting ‘biological boys’ playing on girls’ sports teams
The newly reelected Democratic member of Congress echoed a common Republican talking point that has been weaponized against transgender people across the country.

Fresh off his reelection for the 3rd Congressional District on Long Island, Rep. Tom Suozzi is advising Democrats against “pandering to the far left” or trying to be “politically correct” – while parroting a common Republican talking point used to fight against transgender protections.

In comments to The New York Times on Wednesday, Suozzi laid the blame for Donald Trump’s victory at the feet of left-wing activists who have fought for trans rights. “I don’t want to discriminate against anybody, but I don’t think biological boys should be playing in girls’ sports,” he said, adding that “Democrats should be saying this.”

On Thursday, Suozzi doubled down, suggesting that Democrats’ acceptance of trans girls playing on girls’ sports teams and embrace of other progressive causes had alienated voters. “While some Democrats effectively responded to Republican's claims of chaos at the Southern border, we still ceded too much ground to the Republicans on an issue we could have won,” he said. “And we failed as a party to respond to the Republican weaponization of anarchy on college campuses, defund the police, biological boys playing in girls' sports, and a general attack on traditional values.”

An LGBTQ+ legislator called Suozzi’s comments “gross,” and his remarks were met with intense backlash from LGBTQ+ activists. “I am not surprised that a mediocre Democrat is quick to capitulate, instead of doubling down on their defense for trans people as a vulnerable community,” said Elisa Crespo, executive director of the New Pride Agenda. “The notion that Democrats are doing poorly because they offer even lackluster support for trans people is not only insulting, but dangerous rhetoric coming from a sitting Congressmember.” She said that she hopes his LGBTQ+ constituents “remember these remarks in 2026, or when he decides to come marching in the next Pride parade.”

Allen Roskoff, president of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, used even stronger language, calling Suozzi’s comments "disgraceful, bigoted and dangerous.” “Fuck him for saying that,” Roskoff told City & State, adding that he intended to call Suozzi about the comments. “People should not be bullying such a small minority of the population, and it's bullying of transgender youth, and it's a Republican talking point full of hate,” he said. Roskoff added that in his opinion, the future of the Democratic Party lies with progressives in the mold of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Democratic consultant Matthew Albert told City & State that comments like Suozzi’s aren’t helpful in the aftermath of the election. “Inflation and economic discontent were the top issues in the election. That seems quite clear,” Albert said. “Whatever kind of Democrat you are, that's the main point. Using rhetoric from the right-wing playbook only sets us back further.”

Rep. Nydia Velazquez, who wouldn’t opine directly on Suozzi’s comments, also cautioned against infighting among Democrats. “I’m not going to go there because I am not going to pit one group against the other,” she told City & State while at Somos. “This is how Republicans win, by dividing our communities and dividing our base.”

In a separate statement, Garbarino (R-Bayport) said, "As Vice Chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, I stand by our mission to find consensus, not fuel division. In keeping with the caucus’s goal of fostering collaboration, its members are prohibited from endorsing against a fellow caucus member."

LaLota (R-Amityville) offered in a statement saying that, "While I hold strong common-sense conservative values, I am a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus because I believe partisan gridlock serves no one and that compromise is often necessary to move America forward."

Long Island's fourth U.S. representative, Rep. Laura Gillen (D-Rockville Centre), is not a member of the Problem Solvers. Her office did not immediately provide an answer to whether she will endorse the Democrats who are running against LaLota and Garbarino.

The campaigns of LaLota’s Democratic foe, Chris Gallant, and Suozzi’s GOP foe, Michael LiPetri, each either did not respond or declined to provide comment.

Multiple sources who are familiar with their activities say at least two of the Long Island challengers extended feelers to the incumbents from their own parties, only to be advised endorsements would not occur because of the Problem Solvers' no-endorsement rule.

Garbarino’s Democratic foe, Patrick Halpin, in an interview on Friday, confirmed that he had discussed with Suozzi an endorsement. But he said Suozzi told him, without any prompting, "You know, I’m not endorsing anybody because of the Problem Solvers." Halpin underscored, "It was Suozzi who brought it up to me!"

"I’ve never asked Suozzi for an endorsement," Halpin went on, asserting that nobody in the 2nd Congressional District would care about one.

A week later, a protest at the home of Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg stunned the Israeli public. Dozens of ultra-Orthodox demonstrators attempted to storm the justice’s home in the West Bank settlement of Alon Shvut at night. They vandalized the entrance to the building, broke windows, and damaged Sohlberg’s parked car. Police later arrested more than 60 demonstrators.

As deputy president of the Supreme Court and, under Israel’s seniority system, its expected next president, Sohlberg is considered a consensus figure in Israel: a respected jurist on the one hand, a settler and right-winger on the other. But his order to increase arrests of draft evaders made him a target for Haredi activists.

It should be noted that while the protesters themselves belonged to a fringe group within the Haredi community, amid the sharp conflict between the legal system and the community the act was greeted on the street with cheers — and only feeble condemnation.

“Under normal circumstances, after such a serious incident, you would have seen a delegation of rabbis and senior Haredi figures at Sohlberg’s home,” one Shas leader told me. “But now — crickets.”

Sohlberg’s wife, Meira, who was trapped with him in their home during the attack, later asked the media, “How can Jews hurt one another?” and went so far as to compare the protest to Kristallnacht. All the while, just a few kilometers away, young Jews set out day after day to carry out pogroms against defenseless Palestinian communities, with military and police backing.

Jan 3 [2022] (Reuters) - A federal judge on Monday barred the U.S. Department of Defense from punishing a group of Navy SEALs and other special forces members who refused COVID-19 vaccines on religious grounds.
U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor, acting in response to a lawsuit filed on behalf of 35 special forces service members, issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Navy and Defense Department from enforcing the mandate.
Reed, who was appointed to the federal bench in Texas by President George W. Bush, said the Navy had not granted a single religious exemption to the vaccine rule.
"The Navy servicemembers in this case seek to vindicate the very freedoms they have sacrificed so much to protect. The COVID-19 pandemic provides the government no license to abrogate those freedoms," the judge wrote in a 26-page decision.
The service members had faced a range of military discipline actions for refusing the vaccine.
First Liberty Institute, a legal organization dedicated to defending U.S. religious freedoms which represented the plaintiff service members, hailed the ruling as a victory.
"Forcing a service member to choose between their faith and serving their country is abhorrent to the Constitution and America’s values," said Mike Berry, the institute's general counsel, said in a written statement.
