Hayley Draws Churches
@hayleyfern
I am drawing all Leicester Diocese churches (there are 310 of them!) #artpilgrimage ko-fi.com/hayleydrawschurches
This one was an epic one and I'm so glad that I was asked to do it.What a summer! I'm sure I'll get more done soon but for now I'm going to take a break to do some planning before I return to my day job.Thank you so much for following, looking, liking and generally being around.
The colours here are interesting.The sunlight keeps changing the way it looks, which is why I NEVER work from photographs.. It would be so flat compared to the effects of the sun, the wind, the clouds, the shadows. All I can say is that I look and I find the colours by looking.

Excuse the wobbly filming 🤣 I bet I'm making all of the people who are brilliant at making videos feel quite sorry for me 😆 But I'm balancing everything on a very narrow wall in my defense, including myself 😁
Having the best day here at Martyrs, Leicester! Attended church, met everyone! They had a barbecue and ice cream van after the service... I mean, that was ace. Have been sitting on a wall across the road and so many people have stopped to chat to me. Drawing stage done.
No two churches are the same. Honestly, every single one has a unique personality and I feel like I'm drawing their portrait. It's such a pleasure. I'm planning tomorrow's church drawing and it's going to be an exciting one!
On this day last year I drew my 100th church! Nampantan, Loughborough.
All Saints, Thurcaston drawn earlier in the project when I was using a regular sketchbook across two pages. Thankfully I realised that working flat was the way forward. My friend is scanning them for me and having a nightmare with the fold 🫢 I did about 91 in this book!
Fun thing. My mum found a box of old stuff in the loft and this was my drawing of a church!
St Edward, King and Martyr, Castle Donington Moody clouds Sat on a tree trunk The sound of race cars and aeroplanes Number 110 🎨🤗
On this day, Thursday 8 August 2026, it was a bit chilly. The grass is parched, the trees look thirsty and the clouds are looming. The greater good, of course, is rain at this point, but I was hoping to get the church drawn and painted first, which I did. This is the battle I had with hair today!
Today was a long day but these churches were a long drive away and I tried to make the most of it. It's half way through the summer holidays (I'm a secondary school art teacher). I'm also currently training to be an associate minister with the Church of England! #ministry #artpilgrimage
St Mary the Virgin church, Burrough on the Hill Was open! The inside is a beautiful and peaceful place. The windows are stunning. Hugely appreciated the opportunity to see inside. Said a prayer. Felt happy 🙏
Watercolour painting!! My old faithful pallette 🎨💜 #dalerrowney #aquafinewatercolor #WIP
St Mary the Virgin church Making a start on church number two of the day. Rarely get a whole day and made an early start so I'm up for a good day of drawing today. Perfect weather. #ChurchSketch #onlocation #englishcountryside #artpilgrimage
St Andrew's church in Twyford, Leicestershire this morning. Loads of people stopped to chat. The pub let me use the loo. Just ace. Even found a coffee shop between churches. Made an early start so knew today was going to be a good one. #leicestercofe #hayleydrawschurches #artpilgrimage
And here she is: All Saints church in Keyham, Leicestershire. My 106th church for this project. Met a lovely couple who are going to put a pic of it forward for the village newsletter 🤗 Church was OPEN which was exciting. The most deliciously gnarly Yew trees up front. A joy to do as ever 💜
