Anyway, so for classes, I wrote essays on gay Christian celibates, Walt Whitman, some obscure poets and theologians.

And eventually, queer theology, and the place—often lack—of gay sex within it. The book begins with the most recent work (2020ish) and goes backwards.

It's a collection of essays I wrote as a student at Yale
Divinity School and Religious Studies.

The gay Christian books I'd read told me to be celibate or married, and the novels I was reading weren't concerned with that haha

And here I was, a once deeply closeted gay figuring sexuality out at div school. Why were the novels and poems so much more interesting?
Why didn't gay Christian writers write about sex?

Lots of queer theology books will tell you that being queer and being Christian mean the same thing! But they do not. LEARN WHY IN 'COARSE WORK: ESSAYS IN THEOLOGY AND GAY LIFE' by @samuelernest.com

By far, the most common provocations made by queer
theologians are that christianity is queer and has
always been queer! It even must be queer to be true
Christianity.7 Such claims are familiar enough. And by
now, critiques of such claims may be familiar enough,
or may not be! Many texts that make these arguments
have valuable insights, and many of these authors
have opened up new vistas for queer theology, but the
sheer volume of queer work in theology that agrees that
“queer = Christian” ought to give one pause…
Perhaps I have already divided my readers into two
camps: those who enjoy such claims and agree with
them, and those who have no use for them.
Those in either camp may be familiar with the work of Linn
Tonstad, who has written many a page critiquing these types of
statements. See the end notes for various citations of her work
throughout. Mark D. Jordan’s body of work—especially here,
“On Queer Theology Lost”—is also swimming in my head.
