An ukiyo-e print from Japan. In the foreground, four bolts of cloth are hanging horizontally over a grassy space. In the background, bare willow trees hint that it is winter or autumn. An American Impressionist portrait. A fashionably dressed woman in 1910 fashion sits on a padded bench; she wears a loose dress in light blue with white lace at the collar and sleeves. Her dark brown hair is done up in a bun and she looks off to our right. She sits before a yellow wainscot, above which a white wall rises. To her right, on the wall, part of a Japanese print can be seen, and on her left, on a shelf, part of the bowl of violets is visible.

A Romantic-era still life of five fish (golden bream) lying in a pile, seemingly on a rock by the seashore. The background is dark, but a wave can be seen, going slightly diagonally across the canvas behind the fish, breaking on the shore. The fish are realistically painted with attention paid to their goggling eyes, which lend a note of pathos.

"Judith Slaying Holofernes," Artemisia Geintileschi, c. 1612-3.

A Baroque painting of a Biblical scene, where Jewish widow Judith seduces and the beheads the Assyrian general Holofernes, who was to destroy her city. Holofernes is lying down on a bed; Judith is to our right in a blue dress, and holding his hair with one hand while drawing a sword across his neck with the other. Blood is spurting from his wound and running down the sheets. Another woman, Judith's servant, helps hold him down; his hands clutch at her throat in his dying agony. Judith's expression is calm and determined.

"The Lady of Shallott," John William Waterhouse, 1888.

The Lady has a lantern at the front of her boat, and a crucifix is positioned near the bow. Next to the crucifix are three candles. Candles were a representation of life – two of the candles are already blown out, signifying that her death is soon to come. Aside from the metaphoric details, this painting is valued for Waterhouse's realistic painting abilities. The Lady's dress is stark white against the much darker hues of the background. Waterhouse's close attention to detail and colour, the accentuation of the beauty of nature, realist quality, and his interpretation of her vulnerable, wistful face are further demonstrations of his artistic skill. Naturalistic details include two swallows and the water plants that would be found in a river in England at this time.

A Romantic-era landscape, featuring a scene by a river. In the very center of the canvas is a church, although small. Over it hang thunderclouds, and to the left is a river (the Elbe), now turbulent and full of waves as the storm passes, and two boats are buffeted by the wind. On the right is the riverbank covered with scrubby foliage, which tosses and sways in the wind.
