"Books open our eyes - even more than pictures" - Alfred Munnings

These books, once belonging to Alfred Munnings, represent only a small number of those he owned throughout his life. In the first instance, Munnings describes in his autobiography how he'd replace books he didn't want to read a second time with others. In addition, following the death of Lady Munnings in 1971, a further selection of volumes was sold by the estate. Consequently, it is not entirely possible to present a comprehensive survey of his reading interests but some of the subjects represented on these shelves include: horses, horse racing, literature and history of East Anglia.
By combining the information Munnings provides in his autobiography with the marks and notes he has made in various volumes, we can however, get an idea of his interests in the history of art and his thoughts on contemporary art in the early twentieth century.
Both topics are well represented in his library. There is a wide range of art magazines covering painting across the world. It comes as no surprise that a man like Munnings was interested in almost all that related too..."
