Malaria is gaining ground—
but researchers are developing promising new solutions

Clues from malaria's past

50,000 years ago, a parasite that causes malaria in gorillas developed a gene that allowed it to also infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum is now the deadliest species of the parasite that causes malaria in humans.

According to Manoj Duraisingh, John LaPorte Given Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, studying this evolutionary history will help us understand how a new plasmodium parasite might get transmitted to humans.

Concerns about malaria's present

According to Marcia Castro, Andelot Professor of Demography, environmental degradation and climate change contribute to malaria’s spread. Studies of the Brazilian Amazon found:

A 1% increase in the monthly rate of deforestation in the region led to a 6.3% increase in malaria cases the following month.

A 1% increase in the share of land dedicated to gold mining was associated with a 24% increase in monthly malaria cases.

Fighting for a malaria-free future

Flaminia Cateruccia’s lab has developed new antimalarial compounds to add to bed nets that will rid mosquitoes of malaria parasites and help prevent drug resistance.

“Insecticidal nets currently in use are helping—but it’s only a matter of time until mosquitoes evolve to render this solution less effective.”
