In case anyone is wondering how things are in Madison, WI, this image is from last night. The main encampment at Willy & Baldwin, where Corey Ruiz was murdered by MPD, remains for now. The police have remained hands off for now but storms are expected tonight & that situation may change.

A crowd of protesters over the police murder of Corey Ruiz are seated in rows across the street. The path is effectively blocked for any through traffic (although the road is limited to delivery trucks and busses normally.)

Lovely. “Clear sky.” Yeah. I guess.

WKOW Block 89 webcam image of the Wisconsin State Capitol taken from West Washington Avenue. The upper left says it is 77.2° F and “clear sky” but the wildfire smoke haze is so intense the top of the Capitol dome and gold Wisconsin statue are scarcely visible.

AQI currently a “very unhealthy” mid-200s, putting an antique filter on everything. Breathing is rough out there.

The white domed Wisconsin State Capitol from a block away, along tree line East Washington Avenue, on 16 July 2026. The air quality is bad due to wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada so there’s a faint yellow haze giving the impression of an antique camera filter. The light blue morning sky is cloudless.

While she does claw some things she shouldn’t, her favorite is to wrestle the toy bin daily; dragging herself around & around it. It’s not meant to be a scratching post, but close enough.

Newly in paperback @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social book arrived. Bonus cat pic for the occasion. (He’ll be ok. He had ear surgery last week, hence the cone.)

Some sandhill crane pictures from last week. Just cell phone photos but I was walking about 6 feet away. Saw a crane family with a baby out in a field this morning & wish I’d had both time to stop & a good camera.

Many cute goslings (& ducklings too) at the lakeshore today, but kept a respectful distance.

Yep, the little fellow there was printed on the margins of stamps for years to remind people to use the new zip codes.

Image of vintage, 1960s and 70s US postage stamps. Spontaneous recent botanical garden visit. Why just run errands when you find yourself going past a nice park or arboretum? Errands can wait. Even better when the parks are free.

I like Mothman best, but the Hodag deserves a shoutout. A hoax a century ago. Everyone is in on the joke but it’s just kinda fun (well, fun by rural wooded northern Wisconsin standards.)

The Thin Man. Nick & Nora are boozy, quippy couples goals. And Myrna Loy’s costumes are all fabulous. Just barely pre-Hays Code for the first film of the series so lots of fun (even though it’s a murder mystery.)

Yes, it’s a blurry camera phone image, but I watched a sandhill crane bully a turkey for access to some bird feeders yesterday. Normally they coexist with the turkeys, but the cranes (there is a pair) seemed a little extra feisty for some reason. Maybe there will be chicks this year. 🤞🏻
