Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security: a national security assessment: Key judgements

Analytical confidence ratings (AnCR) for each judgement are given in brackets. These AnCR and probabilistic judgements are explained below.

Global ecosystem degradation and collapse threaten UK national security and prosperity. The world is already experiencing impacts including crop failures, intensified natural disasters and infectious disease outbreaks. Threats will increase with degradation and intensify with collapse. Without major intervention to reverse the current trend, this is highly likely to continue to 2050 and beyond.

This would all require significant regulatory and funding reform but it would be an approach that suited our labour market and built on the status of universities instead of undermining them. Rather than having fewer young people go to university we should have far more, but doing a wider range of courses that better suit our future needs.

There’s been a deliberate and sustained campaign over the last few years by groups that we can identify to transfer net-zero from the sphere of consensus to the sphere of deviance, via the sphere of controversy, and it’s now bearing fruit.

Hallin identified three spheres:

1. Sphere of Consensus
* Issues on which journalists assume there is broad public agreement.
* Reporters often present these values as self-evidently true rather than as matters for debate.
2. Sphere of Legitimate Controversy (sometimes mistakenly remembered as “zone of controversy”)
* The area where reasonable people are expected to disagree.
* Journalists aim to be objective and balanced, presenting multiple viewpoints.
* This is the core arena of political reporting.
3. Sphere of Deviance
* Views considered outside acceptable public discourse.
* These perspectives are often ignored, marginalized, or treated as unworthy of serious consideration.

Who needs for any academic events when you have ChatGTP? Grim.

Becca has learned that ChatGPT is most effective for her when she provides it with an existing starting point like a draft. It works best for generating ideas, refining content and improving tone, rather than for producing text from scratch. Approaching the tool in this way has meant the final output she uses still feels primarily authored by her, whilst also saving her time and energy
