I start the long drive home from Bosnia this morning. I have made new friends and learnt a lot. How a people who have endured suffering that cannot be put into words face life with a kindness and generosity I have never experienced before. Diolch Bosnia 💖
Over 30,000 Bosniaks sought refuge in the UN compound in Potocari in the Sebrenica district in July 1995. The Dutch peacekeepers failed to ensure their safety and surrendered them to the Serbian forces led by Ratko Mladic. The 25,000 women, children and elderly were taken away to Serb controlled
Watched The Dish before leaving for Bosnia. Sam Neill was a fantastic actor and obviously a wonderful human being
I was in Potocari in Sebrenica district this morning for the service of remembrance. I have heard such powerful testimony and learnt of events that will haunt me forever. The inhumanity, the cruelty was off the scale.
The town of Sebrenica. Houses still bare the scars of the war. Some 500 meters from this spot over 70 people, mostly children were killed by 3 shells aimed at a school where a football tournament was being held.
Mad to think that only 31 years this was a warzone in the middle of Europe. The atrocities of the Bosnian war carried out by Serbs and Croats were horrific. The Serbs use of torture, rape and executions are off the scale. A visit to the museum of genocide this afternoon has left me numb.
Shrapnel damage from the war still clearly visible across Sarajevo.
Bore da from Tuzla. Just the two and a half hour drive to Sarajevo today…
refused entry, but some pleading re a missing carnet got us through. I’ve grabbed the odd 30 minutes sleep in the van, tonight I sleep in a bed…
Up at 5am yesterday morning, drove to Dover at 6am, got on the ferry at 2pm, then at 4pm three of us took it in turns to drive, nonstop from Dunkirk to Tuzla in Bosnia arriving at around 7pm having driven through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia. Customs into Bosnia almost
I'm in Austria now!!! 24 hours on the road (2 hours on a ferry) Cymru, England, France, Germany and Austria! Should get to Bosnia by mid afternoon.
For those wetting knickers/pants about border controls between an independent Wales and England. Just passed from France into Belgium on the motorway. Blink and you'd have missed it...
Made it across the channel, heading out of Dunkirk, next stop Belgium. 19 hour drive to Sarajevo ahead of us...
Greatest country on earth, best people, dominators of the world…
Day 1. Up at 5am and on my way to Serbia. Working with @broadcastingscotland.scot and looking at independent public interest news in a country with the same population as Cymru, but with a very different political history for @talking.wales
