Honestly, I'm not upset. The reviewer was incredibly thorough and fair, and praised elements—even what they highlighted as disliking, other reviewers enjoyed, so maybe a future reader will see those as positive. This was a best case scenario for a negative review: kind and thoughtful. Thanks Alex!

"Listen, I love queer stories. I love horror. I love depressing and surreal atmosphere. I did not like this novel. The good: it’s a quick read, the cover design is attractive, and the text itself delves deeper into mental illness than many other texts I have read. The bad: the twists are far too plentiful and ridiculous, bordering on comedic. So much happened in the second half of the text that I felt myself getting whiplash, wondering what the purpose of yet another needlessly angsty confrontation between the friend group was. These characters do not feel like real people, and the events that transpire in the story feel far too manufactured to be believable. Maybe that’s the point? Maybe this book just ain’t for me. I had another Methvin text that caught my eye in my cart that I’m holding off on because of the bad taste this one has left in my mouth."

Recently read "Black Hole Science is Filled with Apologies" by @never.horse. While, admittedly, poetry is hit or miss for me, I found it a strong collection with stunning descriptions among many of the pieces. Fans of poetry, surrealism, and themes of gender/identity, this book is calling to you 🌀🌀🌀

Recently read The Employees and thoroughly enjoyed it. Quick and easy read that invited plenty of questions. Recommend.

A review of Olga Ravn's book "The Employees." Review by C.L. Methvin.

Hard to overstate how delightful this book was.
Written in the form of multiple transcribed audio-recordings, The Employees recounts the events aboard an interstellar spaceship as the human and humanoid crewmembers begin to react differently to their goal, each other, and the mysterious "Objects" that have been retrieved from the planet they are orbiting. Said objects are never entirely defined, described more often as vague shapes or even sensations, or attributed names purely by the feelings they evoke. The collection of objects is a catalyst, but is less important than the events that unfold in response to their mere presence.

It was not a hard read: everything was relatively straightforward, even for being occasionally non-chronological, and it was not a challenge to piece the events together even among the logs that aimed to be intentionally vague or avoid incriminating themselves. Some logs are simple; others invite the question: "Is a human or humanoid recounting this transcription?"; which then invites even larger questions...how would that reframe your opinions of the account? Do the emotions, or actions, or reasons become more or less justified? There are more questions than this, but I fear expounding upon them more would ruin a reader's fun of stumbling upon such questions on their own.
