The team behind one of these dubs apparently considered making a major change to the movie. During the production of this undetermined English-language version of My Neighbor Totoro, executives planned to change the titular character's name to something more American sounding, which obviously would have also altered the movie's title. Several names under alleged consideration included "Craig," "Kyle," "Uncle Sam," and "Joe Toro" (from Cleveland). The story goes that its highly influential director, Hayao Miyazaki, made the decision to keep Totoro’s original name. He reportedly said, “I could not name him Craig… because I would not want to be named Craig.”

When it was first released back in 2016, Pitchfork characterized the EP as part of the band’s aging into classic rock and oldies stations, proof of their fading relevance from the world. In 2020, the Strokes followed it up with The New Abnormal. Pitchfork called that album “sluggish and slight, rendering their signature sound as background music.” They awarded it 5.7 out of 10. That same year, Taylor Swift released two albums — Pitchfork gave one a 7.9, the other an 8.0.

But last month at Coachella, as footage of a bombed-out Tehran played with the caption “over 30 universities destroyed in Iran” — all while Casablancas bellowed “What side are you standing on?” — the moment only underscored how they’ve thwarted all the critics’ expectations. The Strokes were supposed to die off and fade away; a relic from rock’s supposed last gasp at the turn of the century. Instead, they’ve rallied to the moment. In their Spotify Popular tracks, four in their top ten — including the first slot — are for songs from that 2020 record. They accomplished this even as the poptimists scolded them to get back in their rockist place.

Today the present coerces us in the other direction. Rock was once the musical vehicle for something more. Maybe it will be again.

I have many varied thoughts on the IP crossover stuff and there's a great thread about fandom in here, but I can't get behind this part. Hyper-optimized competitive play was not the original dream of Magic's designers and it can't and shouldn't be the only "actual" way to play.

Commander, which again started essentially as interactive Magic fan fiction, is now by far the most played format of the game. Its presence dwarfs that of sanctioned formats like “Standard” or “Modern,” despite those being—and there’s no non-snotty way to say this—the actual game. And the participants, while playing something that looks a whole lot like Magic, are inarguably playing something else. They’re playing a game with different objectives, and they hold different desires for what a Magic card should be or do.
