Chairing today’s RCPath medical examiner/officer hub webinar; delighted to welcome Dr Huw Twamley, the National Medical Examiner, to talk about his 2025 annual report.
Today is my last official day as chair of the Royal Veterinary College’s Ethics and Welfare Committee, 9 years after I joined Council as an independent member. It’s been a pleasure and an honour to work with the best vet school in the world. I wish my successor all the best.
So excited to be in Harrogate for #TheakstonsCrime. Came to check where I need to be tomorrow and it’s buzzing!
I’m a regular visitor to Harrogate but it’s 14 years since I last spoke at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival - looking forward to heading there after work tomorrow to talk about #VeniceNoir on Saturday.
My first and last days as President Elect and Past President of the Association of Clinical Pathologists with predecessors Carl Gray and Ian Frayling, and successors Lance Sandle and Pat Twomey.
Attending my last Association of Clinical Pathologists’ Council meeting after four years as President-elect, President and Past President. It’s been an honour and a pleasure to work with such a great bunch of people.
Honoured to be invited by HM Lord Lieutenant of Rutland to a service to give thanks for the work of those in the armed forces. Particularly pleased that the collection will support #DyingMatters, a charity dedicated to improving end-of-life care and supporting families.
Enjoyed a trip to Highclere Castle today. Slightly cooler than London yesterday (I never thought I’d be relieved it was only 28 degrees!).
Fabulous #HalfSixFix concert at the Barbican yesterday, with @londonsymphony.bsky.social, Sir Simon Rattle and Lucy Crowe OBE. Mahler’s 4th Symphony then dinner with friends - a perfect evening!
Sad to have chaired my last @royalvetcollege.bsky.social Ethics & Welfare Committee after 5 years as chair, and 4 years on Council before that. I have learned so much from some fantastic people.
I’m chairing the fifth annual @rcpath.bsky.social #MedicalExaminer conference today. Delighted to welcome over 200 delegates to hear from a great range of speakers. We’re currently hearing national updates, will hear reflections on the impact of the ME service, and some relevant clinical talks.
Having a lovely evening in Cambridge. Enjoyed evensong at King’s. We gave thanks for the life of Sir David Attenborough on his 100th birthday.
Congratulations @acp-pathologist.bsky.social on a particularly good issue of ACP News. There are some great articles, including a (not too graphic) account of the former Chair’s colonoscopy!
In Manchester for the @acp-pathologist.bsky.social Council dinner and meeting. Managed to fit in a guided tour of Chetham’s Library this afternoon - fascinating history in the heart of the city.
It was a pleasure to attend @rcpath.bsky.social New Fellows’ ceremony this evening and an honour to read the citation for the honorary fellowship for Dr Alan Fletcher OBE, the former National Medical Examiner. It’s always a heart-warming event, celebrating the success of the new fellows.
Loved the women in surgery portrait exhibition @hunterianmuseum.bsky.social @collegeofsurgeons.bsky.social. Great to meet all the surgeons at the private view last week. Do pop in if you’re in London, and visit the Hunterian Museum while you’re there. hunterianmuseum.org/exhibitions/...
Lovely Christmas lights at Belton House @nationaltrust.org.uk last night
Love these candles from The Blackened Teeth - the perfect birthday present for a pathologist!
Had a great morning @collegeofsurgeons.bsky.social learning about the role of volunteers. Had an induction session then a volunteer took me on a building tour and showed me his object of the day in @hunterianmuseum.bsky.social. Finished with object handling. Learnt so much, can’t wait to go back!
I’m just finishing @davidhewson.com’s excellent #TheFourDeadlySeasons. Next on my reading list is Nick Black’s #BareKnuckleSurgeon, the story of Thomas Wakley, who founded The Lancet. It includes ‘incompetent surgeons, corrupt royal colleges, nepotism and quackery’ - I can’t wait to read it!
Had an early start this morning. Heading home after a wonderful weekend at #VeniceNoir. Looking forward to next year already!
Many congratulations to @ianrankin1.bsky.social for being awarded the inaugural #VeniceNoir Award, the Glass Dagger, for his amazing contribution to crime fiction - a very worthy winner.
Thank you and congratulations to all the organisers of #VeniceNoir - it’s been a wonderful weekend. Enjoyed the Grand Finale at Hotel Monaco, particularly the very impressive video of the festival.
Enjoyed discussing Old Hamlet’s Ear with some fantastic authors - @annamazz.bsky.social @ianrankin1.bsky.social and @tombenjamin.bsky.social - it was great fun, with some excellent questions from the audience. #VeniceNoir
The trial of Giacomo Casanova is about to begin! #VeniceNoir #AteneoVeneto
What a fabulous venue for #VeniceNoir! At #AteneoVeneto for a fascinating discussion of ‘Don’t look now’. The trial of Casanova is next, then a guided tour.
