Just got my digital "HI Voted" sticker for voting from abroad in Hawaiʻi's 2026 primary election. Thank you to everyone who makes an effort to cast their vote! Your vote matters!👏💯 cc: @notbeforenoon.bsky.social @demsabroadjapan.bsky.social @demsabroad.bsky.social @votefromabroad.bsky.social
Hmm... looks curiously like the plastic things holding a scented, water-coloring tablet or liquid placed under the water spouts in old-style toilets here in Japan. Water pours into a bowl-shaped tank cover, drains through a hole, and fills the tank. Users can wash their hands while the tank refills.
Happy Father's Day to all those childless cat dads out there who celebrate. And dads and proxy dads and guardians of dogs and other animals too.
Belly-up time = Fully at-ease time. Nothing projects "I completely trust you" like a belly-up in animals. In people, too. 😂 Indoors or out, just like my handsome boy Felix The Tuxedo Cat. BTW: Thought you're a dog person!😊
Fresh limes! From your very own lime tree! So jealous! Prices are so expensive here in Japan that I cut and freeze them when they're available at a decent price. But I'll have a drink to your good fortune!😋
No, separate genus. Here are pics of a masked palm civet grabbing food (apples, mandarin oranges, bananas) put out in our garden for birds during the winter months. Though civets are nocturnal, this one was out during the day. The Japanese name "hakubishin" loosely translates as "white nose stripe."
Well, these three might look like gentle and normally domesticated kitties, but they were born wild, and I assure you that under this roof they are certified wild-ass hellions. I've got the scars to prove it, but I'll refrain from sending those pics.🤣
Thanks. Good point made in this image. Here it is with alt text added.
I don't know what the stats are of injjuries/deaths from falling coconuts, but in Hawaiʻi, yes, there are signs warning people ( = tourists ) to watch out.
Since it's already January, my wee growing season was "done" months ago. But the other day I finally picked my pepper hangers-on. ("Manganji" variety peppers originating in Kyoto). There're sweeter when green and get spicy when red. Dunno what I'll do with them yet. Would love to try drying them.
Owned not renting here, but the machine's been on the lānai. An electronic one needed to be replaced years ago. But this dial/timer relic has lasted. (Need to be careful not to praise it too much because things seem to have a way of breaking down soon after telling them how good they've been!)
Oh, no-o-o-o. It's happened again. It's only Friday morning here in Japan, and still Thursday in other places. Since Caturday has been trending for 300 hours, this can only mean one thing. Cats have taken over control of Bluesky once again! #Caturday
Finally got to taking a photo of these eringi mushrooms (king oyster mushrooms) for sale in a supermarket here in Tokyo in cuddly, cute-looking packs of two each.😀
And any New Yorkers who find meaning in these following words should go! Yes, leave behind the good recipes, but dammit, go already!
Currently, a tasty spray-dried instant coffee. At other times, a hot water pour through a paper filter held in one of these thingies set atop a cup. Must be a dozen of these things hidden here and there in here.
Here in Japan's supermarkets, eringi mushrooms (king oyster mushrooms) are large, so they're typically sold in a pack of two. One is usually larger (taller?) than the other, and I always get an impression of the two of them cuddling or supporting each other. Ah, ever the romantic.❤️ Oh, well...
Er, it's still Thursday here. And tomorrow's gonna be Friday. But, for some unknown reason, the desktop version of Bluesky has "Caturday" trending. Only one possible explanation: cats have taken over the code!
Yep, mod labeling is bonkers. FWIW: screenshots of your posts b/a mod changes in my settings. Usually keep all settings to the left. Moved to Warn and your heron's gone. Moved Graphic Media to Show, and it's visible w/o label. No rhyme or reason to this.. Maybe NYT's immune bc it's verified? Dunno.
Thanks for the inspiration. And the motivation!🙏 Now I'll have to waste no more time and get these sunflower seeds into the ground.
Here's mine, with a wee slice of lime. "Wee slice" because limes have been so expensive here in Japan when they're available at all. This one's from my stock from the freezer, and when those go, I might have to resort to lemons. Oh, no! 🤔😂
Flowering quince (クサボケ) in my garden. Always putting out a slice of orange (or mikan, natsu mikan), diced banana and apple (or peel) for birds during the cold months when there's less natural food available for them. When this quince blooms, it's usually a sign that birds will soon stop coming.
The original post had two photos of Kamala Harris and husband Doug Emhoff. Reposting the photos here with #AltText added. Please add Alt Text to images you post. Without it, pics like these are missed by visually impaired people using screenreaders, and searches for words that describe them. Thanks
Doubly special day here in Japan: National Cat Day, celebrated on February 22, happened to fall on Caturday. With the date written as 2/22, it sounds like "nyan nyan nyan," which is how cats meow in Japanese. Our three cats weren't amused to be woken up for a pic. Names and details in #AltText .
Thanks again @aoc.bsky.social and @mystiquartz.bsky.social !🙏 2/2
