The private sea rescue organization #sosmediterranee.de said on Monday that its crew onboard the Ocean Viking rescued 38 migrants from Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan on Saturday, July 18, including 14 unaccompanied minors, and 8 women. The migrants were found in the Tunisian SAR.

23 Sub-Saharan migrants were rescued from a small migrant boat off the Spanish island of Mallorca on Wednesday. According to survivors, three other people who had been travelling on the vessel died during the crossing and their bodies were reportedly thrown into the sea.

Created in response to Russia’s 2022 invasion, the EU temporary protection measure enables displaced Ukrainians to reside and work in the bloc without having to apply for asylum under the regular procedure. About 4.4 million Ukrainians are currently covered by the scheme.

Munich Airport will build a migrant deportation terminal, despite protests and resistance from trade unions and migrant organizations. The airport has decided part of its infrastructure will be used exclusively by the federal police as a terminal for rejected asylum seekers.

📸The humanitarian rescue vessel Open Arms arrived at the port of Ravenna, Italy, on July 13, carrying 16 migrants rescued in the Central Mediterranean. Among them were seven unaccompanied minors; all 16 passengers were male and are reported to come from Somalia and Egypt.

📸 Some 14 million people have been displaced by fighting in Sudan; most inside the country. That’s roughly ¼ of the population. These photos were taken at a camp for internally displaced people near the besieged city of El Obeid last week.

📸 Migrants arrived in Dover, England yesterday, after being picked up by border guards in the Channel, after a week of no arrivals. Fewer people have crossed from France recently. Some 12,000 people have landed in the UK so far this year. During the same period last year, 21,000 people arrived.

Following a seven-month investigation, the Spanish National Police have arrested a man in La Laguna, Tenerife, suspected of steering a migrant boat that arrived from Gambia last November. The boat carried 84 migrants who reportedly arrived in poor health after a nine-day Atlantic crossing.

Migrant communities participated at the Athens anti-racist festival, which took place in the Greek capital over the weekend (July 3-5). Food, music, dance and discussions were on offer, tackling subjects linked to migration, asylum and displacement among other political topics.

📸 The exiled Afghan women’s cricket team met with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in London this week, during a tour of England. Cooper said it was an “outrage” that the team could not play their sport in their home country. Most of the team has fled to Australia.

📸 85 migrants were rescued by the #OpenArms rescue vessel in the early morning hours of Thursday. Most are reportedly from Bangladesh, Somalia, and Egypt. The ship is expected to arrive in Savona, a north Italian port assigned by authorities for disembarkation, on Sunday.

Spain's biggest regularisation drive has attracted more than one million applications, far exceeding government expectations. For thousands of undocumented workers, especially women in care and domestic jobs, it could mean a path to legal work, stability and new opportunities.

In July 2025, Germany suspended family reunification for many refugees with subsidiary protection until 2027, leaving only a narrow exception for "hardship cases". According to the Foreign Office, just 10 such visas have been issued so far -- despite around 5,000 applications.

📸 The Borgo Mezzanone shantytown near Foggia in southern Italy is home to some 3,000 people during the tomato harvest in the summer. Most residents are migrant laborers, who work long hours in the nearby fields for small wages under often exploitative conditions.

📸 In the UK, the government is planning to use more former military barracks to house asylum seekers to rely less on hotel accommodation. These facilities in Linton-On-Ouse in North Yorkshire are among three sites where 3,750 people are meant to be accommodated.

📸More than 170 Bangladeshi migrants were sent back from Benghazi, Libya, to Dhaka this week. Their return been arranged after a delegation of the Bangladeshi embassy visited the detention center were they were held, the Bangla Tribune reported.

📸 Damar, a long term resident at the migrant camp under the Stalingrad metro in Paris, told us: "It’s even hotter than last year. But we’re used to the heat; we have the same kind in Sudan. The worst part is the night—we can't sleep."

📸 When we visited a migrant camp in northeastern Paris, one man told us: “To cope with the heat, I go to French classes; [the organization] lets us stay in the air-conditioned room until 11 p.m.” But we also spoke to people who could not leave their tents because of injuries.

📸 As Paris is experiencing extreme heat, things are dire for migrants living at a camp under a metro line. "The most common issues are obviously heatstroke and dehydration," a Médecins du Monde coordinator told us. "We called the fire department [because someone] collapsed.”

📸 Paris is experiencing record high June temperatures, as Western Europe is in the grip of a prolonged heatwave. Among those most exposed to the extreme heat are nearly 1,000 migrants living in a camp under a metro line. Aid groups are distributing water bottles and food.

A heatwave is also affecting migrants living in tents. Paris is registering around 38 degrees at the moment, but according to @mdmfrance.bsky.social in the tents, temperatures can climb past 45 degrees. Special measures are being organized to help migrants cope and find enough water to survive.

Demonstrators took part in a protest against the Tunisian government and its migration policy on Saturday (June 20) in the Tunisian capital Tunis. People attending the rally held up handmade signs criticizing the deal struck between Italy, the EU and Tunisia.

📸 In Turin, Italy, an event to mark #WorldRefugeeDay brought together refugees, local activists and politicians in the city hall this week. Among those who spoke at the event was Somali-born Ahmed Abdullahi, the first Turin city councillor who came to Italy as a refugee.

A group of 64 migrants were rescued off the island of Lanzarote this week, after an Atlantic crossing from Morocco. Over all, arrivals on Spain’s Canary Islands from the coast of West Africa have fallen by over 70% this year.

Tomorrow's #WorldRefugeeDay is meant to draw attention to the plight and the resilience of the more than 117 million people displaced worldwide. The EU and UK host about a fifth of the global refugee and asylum seeker population, most from Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan and Venezuela.
