#Proust was no mathematician but he knew math. When he wrote of a condition in this sense, he knew that it was necessary, sufficient, neither, or both, and that these are the only two modifiers that apply—nécessaire and suffisante. @academic.oup.com's Brian Nelson and Adam Watt seem to get it. 🧵1/2
