“I… I’m not sure if I feel that comfortable doing anything that would imply we’re romantically involved,” he murmurs. “At least if we’re in public. Around Cyrene or if it’s just the two of us, it’s fine. But out there…. I don’t know what people will think. And everyone knows everyone—if one person knows, the whole town will know eventually.”

“Okay,” Mydei says gently.

“Are you sure?”

“If you’re not comfortable with it, then you aren’t comfortable,” he says simply.

“I know. But, what about you?”

“I’ll be okay. It’s only for the week.” Mydei squeezes his hand, lips quirked up. “So, what is off-limits here?”

Phainon sucks in a quiet breath, gripping onto Mydei’s sleeve. Guilt wraps its hand around his chest.

“Not… not much. Hand holding. Scenting. You’re still my friend, so I don’t think anyone will say anything if I’m touchy with you. Just, not too intimate. I guess.” The words feel unwieldy on his tongue. His skin crawls. “Is that alright?”

“That’s fine,” Mydei says, nodding.

“Are you sure?”

“It’s only for a week,” Mydei repeats. He knocks his fingers against Phainon’s chin. “And only when we’re out in public, right?”

Phainon's in the middle of pouring the rice pudding mixture into one of their baking pans when their front door opens, hitting the adjacent wall with a soft thud. He freezes, jerking his head when he hears scuffling in the foyer and the sound of a heavy bag being dropped. The smell of pomegranates and smokey wood spreads through the air, returning like an old friend, and something seems to click back into place again.
Phainon holds his breath and waits. He stares at the rice pudding mixture and sets the pot down, his hands shaking too much to continue.
Two steps, and then, Mydei appears at the threshold of their kitchen, his golden eyes bright under their shitty kitchen lights, his blond hair glinting, a tentative smile on his lips as he meets Phainon's eyes. Phainon's throat clogs up, all the words he wants to say competing for space. He fists the fabric of his apron.
I'm sorry. I'm a coward. You're so handsome it hurts. I love you, I love you, I love you.
"Hey," Mydei greets, inclining his head.
"Hi," Phainon breathes.

"Phainon, calm down," Hyacine interrupts. Her voice sounds frazzled, and Phainon feels even worse for it.
What is he doing, complaining to Hyacine? "Why would Mydei hate you?"
"He does," Phainon insists. He starts pacing again.
His fingers clutch his teleslate like it's his lifeline. "He
—he does. He-Hyacine, I asked him if it was me. If I was the alpha he liked. And he said yes. He said yes, and I-oh gods. I told him he couldn't like me.
He couldn't like me because he was an alpha, and he got so mad. He started arguing with me and telling me he already knew and calling himself an idiot for agreeing to that stupid dating competition with me and then he left and he's been gone all day and Hyacine-"
His throat clogs up. He drops to the floor, a weight pressed so hard against his chest that it's to breathe
-hard to think. All he knows is he has to say it, has to say everything he couldn't say right now or he'll regret it for the rest of his life. His knees press against his chest. He wraps his arm around them, sinks his nails into his flesh.
"Hyacine, I love him."

Hyacine raises a brow.
"Do you actually want to know what I'm thinking," she asks flatly, "or will you run away again the moment it becomes too much?"
Tension returns to him like an old friend.
"I-I won't run like before," he stutters, scent souring with shame. "I'm sorry for that, Hyacine."
Hyacine narrows her eyes. She regards him coolly, weighing his words against his actual resolve. He tries not to cower under her judgment.
"Do you know what you sound like, Phainon?"
Phainon swallows hard, bracing himself.
"What do I sound like?"
"You sound like a boyfriend who doesn't know how to help his struggling partner."
He scrunches the fabric of his jeans.
"But I'm not-we're not-" He stops. Swallows.
Breathes. "Mydei and I aren't like that."
Hyacine's gaze sharpens. Her scent sharpens with it.
"Then what were all those dates?"

"I'm right then. It's something I did?" he asks.
"Phainon..."
"Please, Castorice. I just want to help him, and Mydei won't tell me anything at all, so you're my last resort."
She bites her lip, closes her eyes, and furrows her brows. Then, she turns to him, scanning his expression with a sudden intensity that catches him off-guard. It's a jarring change from the conflicted look she'd had moments before-critical now where she'd been unsure. He swallows hard and lets her search his face like she's picking him apart for his true intentions.
He isn't lying. There's no deception for her to find.
He is worried about Mydei. He does want to help him. He wants Mydei to stop avoiding their apartment; he wants Mydei to stop avoiding him.
Her lips press together. Castorice rests her elbows on the table. Her expression flattens as she eyes him.
"Phainon,"-her tone is even; Phainon straightens his spine-"what are your thoughts on an alpha liking another alpha?"
What?

Hyacine's eyes narrow. Her fingers tap against her computer, nails clicking against the metal cover in a rhythmic pattern. Phainon squirms under her stare.
"What?" he asks.
"You aren't going to like what I have to say," she says cryptically.
Phainon nervously laughs.
"Well, now you have to say it," he attempts to tease.
His hand curls into a fist, nails pressed against his palms.
"Then you have to, in good faith, consider my question, Phainon," Hyacine says. "Genuinely."
Phainon swallows hard, straightening in his seat. He bites the inside of his cheek.
"I'll try?"
Hyacine's brows furrow. Her scent turns bitter with frustration, wilted flowers and the sour smell of rain.
"Are you sure you don't like Mydei romantically?" she asks.

He still nods as if she asked.
"Yeah. It came this morning."
"That's not your sweatshirt though," she says, pointing to the black hoodie.
Phainon hesitates, and shakes his head.
"No, it isn't."
"I can smell Mydei's scent on it," she says, brow raised. "Why do you have Mydei's clothes on?"
"He let me borrow it," Phainon says slowly. He raises his shoulders, and the collar of the hoodie rises with it-hiding parts of his face from view.
Hyacine stares. She opens her mouth, seems to think better about it, and sighs instead.
"Do you want to split a serving of honeycakes?" she asks, resigned.

"Do you like it?" Phainon asks quietly.
Mydei's lips part. He swallows hard enough for Phainon to watch his Adam's apple bob.
"What's the occasion?" he asks. His hands slip through the scarf until they reach an end, tracing his thumb along the embroidery.
"No occasion. I just saw it and thought it would look good on you."
Mydei purses his lips. His scent thickens in the air like it's trying to choke them.
'It's pretty."
"Yeah?" Phainon breathes.
"Yeah. Thank you, Phainon." Mydei lifts it over his head, drapes it over his shoulders. The red makes the rest of Mydei's complexion brighten. It makes the gold of his eyes look lighter, like they're glinting.
Mydei reaches for his bowl again.
"It looks good on you," Phainon offers.
Mydei exhales. A tired smile pulls on his lips.
"Thank you."

'practice dates' at your expense. He gets your insight on why he's a bad date. He improves himself for the next picture-perfect omega that his rose-tinted eyes gravitate towards. But what about you? What's in it for you?''
Mydei purses his lips. Phainon smells his annoyance rolling off of him in weak waves. He clasps his hands together and stuffs them in his lap, nails pressed against flesh.
"Not everything is an exchange, Cipher."
"I believe that's called getting taken advantage of—"

His heart thunders in his ears. Mydei is a warm weight atop him, his laughter soft and rumbling like a chimera's purr. He props himself up on his elbows and the sunlight slips through the strands of his hair, glowing like a halo. Phainon's laughter dies. He breathes and breathes and breathes in sweet pomegranates and wood smoke and Mydei's playfulness laced with ease in his scent.
He's always smelled sweetest like this, with that tiny curve of a smile that brightens his whole face.
Phainon smiles back. His lips part. His body heats up while under Mydei's-the other close enough that all he sees and hears and smells is him. He looks so alive it makes Phainon ache. Mydei's earring sways in tiny circles with every laugh from the other, and Phainon is entranced.
He swallows hard enough for his throat to click, eyes flickering over the way Mydei's expression softens.
There's a feeling there, on his face, that Phainon isn't sure he could name, but its so gentle, and kind, and Phainon-
Mydei jerks back like he's been yanked.

There's no wall between the space, allowing Phainon full view of Mydei pulling ingredients out of their fridge, opening and closing their cabinets, shuffling their pots and pans around, and starting dinner. His chest expands at the familiar sight, the citrus of his scent sweetening.
"He's a good kid," Audata says. "Polite, patient, respectful. He must be if he can handle living with you, dear."
"Mom," Phainon protests, glancing back at his teleslate. Audata laughs-the sound so loud and boisterous, it seems to brighten the whole room.
"Whoever steals Mydei's heart will be one lucky omega," she says, smiling.
Phainon's smile falters.
Mydei with a partner. An omega wrapping themselves around his shoulders, leaning their weight against him. Their sweet scent clinging to Mydei's skin.

"Wanna bet on it?" he asks.
Mydei raises a brow, then, narrows his eyes.
"Bet on what?" he asks suspiciously, not unlike how one pokes a sleeping tiger.
"Bet that you can plan better dates," Phainon says. "That you're a better lover."
Mydei scoffs.
"Against that male alpha? Any decent human being would win."
Phainon pauses, an idea forming in his head. And it's such a bad idea.
Such a stupid idea. But, it could be fun. And Mydei has always indulged his stupid ideas.
"What about against me?" he asks.
(Phainon and Mydei have always been known for their competitions.
It's the basis of their almost four year friendship. There's no reason they can't also compete over who's the better date either.)

Summary:
He thinks it ironic that Olruggio's kindness is his salvation and his undoing-the link that keeps him alive and the torturous burden that prevents his peace.
He ought to be angry at him. He thinks a part of him is.
But time tempers all emotions, and, even back then, Qifrey couldn't find the energy to stay angry at him for long. It was Olruggio's nature, after all, to sacrifice himself on the altar if it meant saving one more life.

“Can I not simply stare to admire you?” he murmurs. He’s five paces away. Four. Three. Two. He stands close enough to see the freckles on Phainon’s golden-hued skin, close enough to breathe in his earthy scent. His want is a physical being that demands he grip Phainon’s body and never let go lest this moment slips away from them both. He cups Phainon’s face, and Phainon settles his hands on his hips.

Sometimes, he watches Phainon and thinks how fortunate it is that they can be this kind, this delicate with each other now.

“I think you’re the more eye-catching one between the two of us, Mydeimos,” Phainon says. His lips twitch, and Mydei can feel the muscles of his cheek moving under his fingers.

What a miracle it is that they have this now. What a relief.

I forgot it's wednesday happy wip thursday

Phainon digs through his pockets until he finds his earbuds and pushes the cable into the headphone jack. He watches Mydei walk away, turning the corner towards their bedrooms, before he looks back at his mother.

“Mydeimos is handsome, isn’t he?” Audata muses. Phainon flinches, a startled laugh dragged out of him.

“He is, yeah.” He catches Mydei pass by the living room again on his way to the kitchen. There’s no wall between their living room and kitchen, allowing Phainon a full view of Mydei pulling ingredients out of their fridge, opening and closing their cabinets, shuffling their pots and pans around, and starting up dinner. Phainon’s chest expands at the familiar sight, the citrus of his scent sweetening.

“He’s a good kid,” Audata says. “He’s polite, patient, respectful; he must be if he can handle living with you, dear.”

“Mom,” Phainon protests. Audata laughs—the sound so loud and boisterous, it seems to brighten the whole room.

“Whoever steals Mydei’s heart will be one lucky omega,” Audata says, smiling.

Phainon feels his own smile fall.

Mydei with a partner. An omega wrapping themselves around his shoulders. Their sweet scent clinging to Mydei’s skin.

That’s certainly a thought.

“Yeah,” he halfheartedly agrees. “One lucky omega indeed.”

happy wip thursday no i didn't forget it was wednesday three weeks in a row #moowrites

"Lamb gyros from one of the food trucks down the street," Mydei says, nodding his head somewhere behind Phainon. He steps in front of him and pulls something out of his jacket pocket, his expression carefully blank. "This is also for you."
He dangles a keychain of the fattest samoyed Phainon's ever seen in front of him. It's the size of a baseball and made entirely of felt fabric, swaying on a metal clasp. There's a black collar around its neck, and it's eyes are curved slits sitting just above its snout. Its tongue lolls out in a perpetual smile, and it's the most adorable thing he's ever seen.
"It's cute," he coos, taking the keychain from Mydei. He squishes the plush, smiling at the endearing expression on the pup. His chest is sticky and warm. He looks up and catches Mydei licking his lips.
"It reminded me of you," Mydei admits, lowering himself on the curb. He smells like embarrassment and overripe pomegranates, and the words hit Phainon like a punch.
He holds his breath. Mydei's lips are quirked up; his eyes are a soft amber when he stares at the samoyed plush in his hands. A hot rush spills over Phainon's body, and he squeezes the samoyed a little tighter.
"I got something for you too," he blurts out. Mydei looks up at him, surprised.
"You did?"
"Yeah." He swallows roughly and digs through his gift bag. "Give me your hand."
Mydei raises a brow but offers his hand. Phainon pulls it closer, his skin warm against his fingers. Phainon's hands feel clammy, like when he gave that recipe book to Mydei last week, and he hopes Mydei can't feel the sweat on his palms.
He drops the keychain in Mydei's hand—this one of a crocheted lion with strands of yarn stitched and teased from its head like a frizzy mane. It's small, nowhere near the size of the samoyed Mydei gave him. But, Phainon had seen it hanging in a stall while waiting for Mydei to return and thought, this is Mydei. So he bought it.
"You got me the same thing I bought you?" Mydei asks, sounding faintly amused.…

“Why didn’t you then?” Phainon asks, his words clipping at the heels of Mydei’s.

Mydei flinches, caught entirely off-guard.

“What?”

“Why didn’t you text me? Or call me?” he asks.

Mydei purses his lips. He lowers his head and stares at his hand. Taps his foot against the floor.

“I didn’t have much to say,” he says.

Which, that isn’t entirely the truth. There were plently of times when he thought of Phainon throughout the week. He thought of messaging Phainon a picture of a dog he saw that reminded him of the other, clothes so bright and so ugly that he’s sure Phainon would like them, restaurants he thinks the other would enjoy if he knew about them. But he’d always talk himself out of messaging—stuck wondering if the other would respond, or even appreciate the text.

In hindsight, the hypocrisy of his words is almost embarrassing.

“You think we still would’ve met in this alternate universe where you’re a chef and I’m a pilot?” Phainon asks. “Like, maybe I’m trying out a new restaurant during a layover in Castrum Kremnos or something, and it’s so good that I want to give my compliments to the chef. So you come out, and we hit it off immediately and exchange numbers and get close.”
Mydei laughs.
“Sounds like you’ve thought about this a lot.”
“Only as much as I could for the past few minutes,” Phainon says. He lifts their joined hands, running a thumb along the veins on the back of Mydei’s hand. “What do you think?”
Mydei smiles.
“I think we would’ve met, even if we weren’t doing what we’re doing now,” he says. “It doesn’t matter anyway though, does it? We’re not living in an alternate universe where you’re a pilot and I’m a chef. We’re living in this one, and we’ve already met.”

“He’s a charming boy for sure,” says Cyrene, speaking like she’s talking about a friend’s son and not her childhood friend, “but he can be a lot stupid.”
“Hey!”
“And he has a terrible sense of fashion too,” Cyrene continues. “The only reason he looks half-decent is because Aglaea picked out his wardrobe herself.”
“You have the Goldweaver as your personal stylist?” Mydei asks, brow raised. Phainon looks like he’s trying to sink into his chair.
“She’s worried that… the public might not appreciate my personal style,” Phainon says delicately.
“She’s worried it will destroy his reputation. Here,”—she pulls her teleslate out and swipes up, giddy with excitement—“I have pictures!”
“Wait—”
Cyrene practically throws her teleslate at Mydei, leaning over Phainon to show it to him.

Phainon chuckles, a short sound that’s more breath than laugh if Mydei’s being honest.
“I know, but I wanted to hear it in-person and have you hear it for yourself.” Phainon shoots him a charmingly silly smile, one that softens his eyes into something well-intentioned and earnest. “I’m good, aren’t I?”
Mydei flicks Phainon’s forehead. Phainon flinches.
“You’re good,” he says gruffly. “Obviously.”
Phainon preens, and it makes Mydei’s chest warm.

"I want you both to fake date each other to advertise this show."

“I can tell what you’re going to say from the look on your face, Mydei,” Cipher drawls, lips curving into a frown, “so let me just say one more thing before you give me your answer.”

Mydei raises a brow and nods. Cipher takes a deep breath.

“Phainon is a famous idol with millions of fans vying for any scrap, any hint, of information on him,” she starts. “You are a renowned, critically acclaimed actor whose private lifestyle leaves fans always hunting for more. Even a single photo of the two of you together on this project would get people talking.”

Cipher pauses. She glances around the break room, then leans in closer.

“One photo would get everyone talking about Castorice’s project,” she hisses. “Imagine what a handful would do. Her project would be the talk of the online town. So many people would watch it—follow it—desperate to see Okhema’s Golden Boy with Kremnos’ Pride. And you know how much this show is her baby, Mydeimos.”

Mydei narrows his eyes.

“That’s your final argument?”

“Yes,” Cipher says emphatically, raising a brow. “Doing this would make Castorice happy, Mydeimos. Don’t you want to see her happy? Don’t you want to see all her hard work get the recognition it deserves?”

Mydei opens his mouth, pauses, and sighs.

“You're stooping to emotional manipulation now?”

“Anything for my lover,” Cipher answers smoothly, “even if it means manipulating you for her.”

Mydei narrows his eyes. His jaw tightens, and he crosses his arms, resigned.

“I’m Phainon. It’s good to meet you, Mydeimos.”

“Mydei is fine.” He takes the other’s hand, sizing him up. Phainon’s lips quirk higher, gaze roving up and down Mydei’s form. “I don't think there's anyone in Amphoreus who doesn't know your name, Phainon.”

Phainon laughs, ducking his head and rubbing the back of his nape like he’s shy. Phainon’s name is a chart-topper in and of itself. He’s perhaps one of the most popular solo artists currently, and even as someone who doesn't particularly gravitate towards Phainon’s genre, Mydei has still heard his songs—on the radio, in coffee shops and stores, and on set among the backstage crew.

“You too,” he offers, lingering on his face, cheeks faintly pink. “You’re even more handsome in person.”

Mydei blinks, stunned. Next to him, Castorice chokes and hacks wildly. Cyrene cackles. And Phainon… Phainon’s eyes widen, before he clears his throat, retracts his hand from Mydei’s grip, and turns to the rest of the table.
