really incredibly funny how Mixam's new "inappropriate content levels" feature is essentially just... three totally perfunctory levels and then a fourth that slaps a thick-ass upcharge on ALL pornography. Okay

a screenshot of the Mixam website showing how much it'd cost for me to reorder 100 copies of my lesbian smut comic WET FLOOR. there's a new toggle beneath the "quantity" input box with the choices "My artwork is appropriate for all ages" and "my artworkcontains some content that may not be inappropriate for all ages." clicking the second brings up a dropdown menu with four "inappropriate content" levels. this is level one selected, "mildly sensitive to some audiences", which might include references to alcohol or gambling, satire or "suggestive themes or light innuendo". basically T for Teen stuff. the base price, without expedited shipping, is $175, or $1.75 a unit

same screenshot as pic 1, but now the dropdown menu is set to Level 2, "Mature content but not overly graphic", which might include alcohol, gambling or substance abuse, "adult themed jokes", moderate gore, horror or violence, or *partial artistic nudity*. partial and artistic. so, like, a sketch of the Venus de Milo, i guess? regardless, the standard price point is still $175 for 100 copies.

Level 3 is "explicit, violent or offensive", material that could "cause strong discomfort in a public or professional setting". this includes graphic substance abuse, "heavy profanity or swearing", or realistic violence, blood, gore, horror or serious injuries. it also includes... full or partial provocative or artistic nudity, as well as implied but non graphic sexual acts. a sketch of Donatello's David? whoa, buddy, that's Level 3. this is stuff i'd definitely label as "For Mature Readers" on a comic, sure, but the price point remains at $175 for 100 copies

heeeere we go. Level 4 is "extremely graphic, violent or offensive", for books that might contain graphic violence, torture, mutilation, dismemberment, wound detail or excessive gore.... OR any explicitly graphic pornography or sexual act. this category also includes "illustrated bestiality or fetish content", which could broadly be interpreted to include ANY erotic furry content, as well as just "full/partial nudity or invasive nudity", which i suppose is any nudity deemed not artistic enough. (also on the list: "pervasive profanity or swearing". so like HELLA cussing.) the cost for the books is now $251.50, a 31% increase, and the slower base option for shipping is gone. Okay?????

The panel composition and tone work in this is breathtaking. I'm HYPED for whatever Juan Gee does next!

Speaking of packaging: DC's recent "Compact Comics" line is impressive! $10 for a full TPB, printed on tactile uncoated stock. Makes Marvel's trades look even trashier by comparison. Great excuse to get The Best Batman Comic!

31. BROOD, by Boney, 2026. Two fantasy adventurers grow closer together after a chance encounter with a desperate, gravid tentacle monster. Hot stuff-- I'm always here for eggs! Loved the use of spot color for otherworldly sexual emphasis, too.

29. EDEN II, by K. Wroten, 2023. A polycule of queer punks grapple with the rise of a society-shattering virtual alternate reality. I liked a lot of what this was putting down, and the constant protagonist switch-ups were fun, but it got a bit too tangled and prolix for my taste in the back half

27. THE BOY WONDER, by Juni Ba, 2024. Now this is a FANTASTIC Batman comic. Juni Ba works pure magic with his page layouts and color comps to write Damian Wayne at both his most mythic and most relatable. Readers new to Ba can start here and then check out his creator owned stuff, it’s ALL superb.
