The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture of a robed and crowned woman on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, within New York City, U.S. The copper-clad statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and its metal framework built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886.

The Closing Door
America's immigration policies provoked a national debate during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Though unrestricted immigration had helped build and strengthen the United States, many Americans believed that the country could not continue to absorb the steadily increasing numbers of new arrivals. Restrictionists-those who opposed the open door policy - denounced certain groups of immigrants as racially inferior and accused them of crowding into urban slums, overburdening social service agencies, and undermining American wages.
In response to these concerns, the federal government passed a series of immigration laws, each one barring additional categories of individuals who might endanger the welfare of the country. Nevertheless, immigration continued to rise. Ultimately, a wave of antiforeign hysteria following World War I gave restrictionists in Congress enough leverage to impose strict quotas. The quotas drastically reduced the number of immigrants who could be admitted, and favored ethnic groups that fit the restrictionists' Anglo-Saxon ideal.

Newcomers sometimes made great sacrifices to qualify for naturalization as soon as they were eligible. Many, however, chose not to become citizens, while others delayed their applications until they had found jobs, helped relatives immigrate, or, in the case of many women, raised their families. As the documents presented here show, immigrants often waited over 10 years, even 30 to 40 years, to acquire citizenship.
While the government actively encouraged most newcomers to apply for naturalization, it denied this privilege to certain immigrant groups - the Chinese, for example, in 1882; and after 1911, the Japanese and most other Asians. These bans were not completely revoked until 1952.
