Baltimore climate dad anthropologist fighting existential terror w/ existential counter-terrorism. The soft underbelly of the cutting edge. Working on resilience, local governance, urban gardening, tool repair, fermentation.
Folks at the farmer's market are really leaning into the cyclospora opportunity. I've never seen this vendor selling this much lettuce before.
Interestingly, it's not unprecedented, at least in the Veracruz area. Salsa Macha is pretty close to Chili Crisp.
I'm sure I'm not the first to come up with it, but I invented it tonight for sure. Seaweed-pack seaweed squares, microwave rice, and quartered hot dogs = hotdog sushi. The 4-year-old and the 9-year-old both absolutely wrecked a pile of them.
Yesterday I installed roof rails on the family car. Last night, my brother-in-law saw it and announced that he had a roof mounted cargo box that didn't fit his new car. He put it on our car immediately, and now suddenly I feel like we're adventurous traveling people.
10 years ago I had the coolest candy dish in the office. No idea where some of these are from. Nepal, Ghana, Kenya, possibly something from Turkey, El Salvador, or Guatemala in there as well. Some of were awful. Especially the Rasilo, which is best described as sweet & salty dirt w/ herbs.
Tonight's project is making like a million little Among Us guys for my 9-year-old out of air-dry clay. I used to make porcelain tea bowls on a potter's wheel.
Yesterday was the 42nd anniversary of Neuromancer. Thanks to @greatdismal.bsky.social for making my teenage head spin when I finally read it in 1994.
First callaloo of the year made 100% from community garden ingredients.
This specific Gerber Shard has been on every keychain I've had for probably 16 years. Incredibly useful for all manner of intended and unintended tasks. I've had the buckle on my belt for even longer - thrift store purchase in 2005. But the belt itself has been replaced twice since then.

Discussing this video with friends after we watched it for the first time:
Bought myself a fun little guy for Father's Day. Tired of wrangling outlets and extension cords.
And the third perfect gift, from my beloved wife, who knows that people who care about whiskey will buy me better (and more expensive) whiskey than what she wants to bother with (She's a Wild Turkey 101 girl).
The second gift was from the 9-year-old, which is a wallet that displays your driver's license photo through a sort of Temu-batman cutout. I appreciated the gift, because I needed a new wallet, but also because he chose it, and chose it like 4 months ago.
So I'm going to take a moment to brag about my father's day gifts. Foremost among which is the gift from my four-year-old, who wanted to give me, "A Christmas tree with pictures of the family clipped to it." (He also wanted pictures of our neighbors clipped to it, but my wife didn't have any handy)
Running a community garden in the middle of a large urban neighborhood isn't always tomatoes and peppers. Sometimes it's waging a war of extermination against a massive warren of rats who have taken up residence underneath your flower beds.
In celebration of Tupac's birthday, here's a picture of him with Jada Pinket-Smith in a 1987 advertisement for the mall down the street from my childhood home.
Walking back with a handful of vegetables after watering the community garden, and a stranger yells at me from across the street, "whatchoo got?" With the same tone used to ask "whatchoo holdin'?" "Beets and radishes. You set?" "All good, brother. Have a good morning."
Quote-Post a random photo from your camera roll. No explanation (but pls use alt text). I want to be confused.
Okay, I'm sure I'm not the first person to think this, but wouldn't this be the perfect time to have a gorilla with a trump mask up at the top of the scaffolding tossing barrels at these guys? And maybe they could have comically large hammers with which to smash those barrels?
Scared the shit out of myself by leaving a small freshly picked beet on the counter after breaking off the leaves and stems, turning around and thinking there was suddenly a dead mouse right next to me.
