lil' response to the responses to my response:

hi folks! lil update/response to uhhh all the responses to my recent response video!!

First off, WOW thank you all so much for the kind messages and to all the people who decided to check out the original "to Create is to Connect" animation. Also thank you to everyone who decided to order a hat, the support is hugely appreciated 💚

Secondly, I wanted to address some misconceptions I've been seeing regarding the video and also the idea of the overall reception to the TCTC animation.

The comments I showcased in my response video were NOT the norm, and I'm NOT blaming them for the animation flopping. I'm seeing a lot of people saying "wow I can't believe SO MANY people would say that about you selling merch" or things along the lines of "I can't believe they would do this to ur video!!"

In reality, there were very few people commenting things alluding to me being a sellout, really just a handful. Most of the comments I got were very supportive and from people who really enjoyed the animation!

I went on Bluesky a bit after the video had started flopping, looking to see if it maybe had anything to do with the algorithm being weird lately. Then, I got a handful more replies from people, saying they and others had felt icky from the way I presented the merch tie-in. Because of that I reflected on it, and I felt like it was something I wanted to address/change.

I think the TCTC animation flopped mostly due to YouTube's algorithm and them just not sending out notifs to people. I've gotten lots of comments from y'all saying you never even knew I had posted the animation, and had never been notified! The response video surpassed the original's viewcount in less than 2 days so, go figure, lol.

Maybe it's just a feature of YouTube's to suppress videos that link away from their site, or even shortform content that's not uploaded as a YT Short, I don't really know!

But I don't think it's the fault of the people who were upset about the lack of transparency for the TCTC animation, and I don't want anyone being harsh or rude to them. I'm not trying to create some kinda boogeyman witch hunt thing and some of the comments I got in that vein left a sour taste in my mouth.

Most of y'all haven't been like that though and I'm very glad to see it. I really really appreciate all the support and compliments I've received. Sometimes YouTube sucks, but I'm grateful to have our nice little goober zone 🌱

this might be another shot in the dark of my long-running confusion with the EU GPSR stuff, but do any other indie merch sellers have any solutions to this? I get so many mixed messages on shipping to EU that i’m not really sure if these regulations are even a big deal?

okay, reflecting on all of this and what I ultimately wanted out of the video, I decided to add [ Animated Promo ] to the end of the title.

I viewed this animation as a normal work on my channel, with a promo at the end for my hat I designed, but maybe it comes across as an unwelcome surprise to be watching a neat animation with a nice message, to then be hit with "oh that was an ad?" at the end of it.

I spent well over a month animating everything, and even longer designing the hat, finding a local manufacturer and planning everything. In my eyes both the hat and animation are works of mine that I'm proud of! It just so happens that the hat you can buy and own physically, and by doing that you're directly helping me like... survive and pay rent, more than adsense can.

I didn't initially want to label the animation as an ad because I believe it stands alone without that context, and that by focusing on the hat in the title, I would be selling the video short. I'm not a stranger to seeing an obvious merch video and then choosing not to watch it because I'm not interested, and I'm assuming it's just gonna be the creator talking about what they're selling for most of the runtime.

But ultimately I realized that trying to hide the promotional nature of the "to Create is to Connect" animation in hopes that it would escape the limits of being "just an ad," could be seen as deceptive, and that's not what i wanted at all!

I always try to be up front and honest with y'all, and the nature of YouTube can sometimes make me lose sight of that in hopes of reaching the widest possible audience. Hopefully this change can help the people who DO watch it feel like they know more of the context beforehand so they can better appreciate the animation as a whole.
