Took my first day off at the new job now that we’re fully staffed again. Boy howdy, it feels good to not be thinking about work right now. (Damnit.) Heading to Carmel-by-the-sea for the first time! I hear there’s some cool art there, can’t wait to check it out!

Husband is a natural at this cooking and plating stuff, wow

Chicken scallopini with roasted broccolini and mashed potatoes! The tender breast of chicken is topped generously with a cream sauce of white wine, shallot, and garlic and fresh parsley. It sits on top of a mound of mashed potatoes, which is hugged by several roasted broccolini.

Surprised with a day trip to Filoli, this awesome retirement estate built in the 1920s and donated to the National Registry in the 1970s. Incredibly grounding to just spend time in a beautiful place with someone you love. Thank you, @thependrake.bsky.social <3

It’s the husband! He’s waving hello from inside a safe room(!), located inside the butler’s pantry. Just behind him are cabinets filled with old, valuable silverware.

Bread 2 (woo hoo!) This time I doubled the portions on Paul Hollywood’s recipe and kneaded using my stand mixer for seven minutes! I think I could have baked it a few minutes longer, but we’ll see how it came out when we cut it this afternoon!

After the first rise! Dough is maybe two inches under the rim of a 5 qt Kitchen Aid mixing bowl.

Shaped and ready to go for its proof. Dough was rolled onto the oiled silicone mat, sprinkled with bread flour and rolled onto a rectangle. Then I formed a roll and placed it in the 11 inch bread tin.

Here it is wrapped in its proofing bag before going into the oven.

Look at how much it’s risen in just an hour! The dough is filling the giant tin almost completely; before the dough filled about 40 percent of it.

The baked loaf after 32 minutes! The split top held nicely, providing texture to a honey-brown crust. The edge looks a little light, but there was a delightfully hollow sound on knocking.

Since this week coming up is *technically* W1 2026, I decided to move into my new Bullet Journal! Thought I would share my monthly spread:

A two-page spread of contained boxes, drawn by hand with a ruler.

On the left, January 2026 is outlined in a wintry-blue box. Beneath it, a page-length calendar with each day divided into nine sections: date and day, a fill-in box for six daily habits, a space for important notes about home or work.

On the right, three boxes: one for tracking word count, calories, and related notes by day; one for setting intentions for the month; and one for noting highlights as they occur.

Finneas was built with cards we had in the burrow, so he’s…not ready for prime time yet. XD It was a great experience trying to cobble this together though, and I’m looking forward to improvements :)

Today’s dinner: Martha’s Best Berbere-Spiced Beef Stew! Blue Apron messed up one too many times, so I moved over to Marleyspoon, a Martha Stewart joint. I chose this meal service because it had the most-promising international menu! So far, these are all hitting. :9

The recipe card! Martha’s Best Berbère-Spiced Beef Stew with Couscous, Sour Cream & Mint. Serves 2. Cooking time: 40-50 minutes. 790 Calories per serving; 35g fat, 39g protein, 67g carbs.

The finished dish! Two hearty bowls of beef stew with carrots, zucchini, diced onion, couscous, garlic, peeled tomatoes, and Berbère spices. Topped with sour cream, black pepper, and strips of fresh mint.
