Kinda remarkable the extent to which the Trump White House has made some of the same mistakes as the Biden administration with its messaging on inflation. This is from a WH spox:

The July CPI report is further proof that President Trump’s long-term agenda is delivering: prescription drug and auto insurance costs continue to fall, real wages are rising, and beef prices have cooled while other household essentials like eggs, poultry, and dairy remain low.

Despite temporary disruptions stemming from Iran, core CPI is near the Fed’s two-percent target rate. As the Trump administration’s economic policies continue taking effect, Americans can count on more job, wage, and economic growth.

Rogers’s attempt at AI slop may not have landed, but if successful on Tuesday, Republicans are sure to mine the outspoken El-Sayed’s many podcast appearances. For instance, he spoke in April about J.D. Vance’s “brown kids” and speculated about whether the vice-president, at some point, will need to have “a really awkward conversation” with his children about his political beliefs and making his career out of “hating people who are different.” (In that same interview, El-Sayed also encouraged Second Lady Usha Vance to leave her husband.)

El-Sayed suggested that such appearances are an asset, showcasing his “bad habit of calling out hypocrisy when I see it.” Instead of backtracking or saying he’d phrase things differently now, El-Sayed challenged Vance to a debate on The Joe Rogan Experience.

“It’s hypocritical to believe that America is only big enough for one group of people if that does not include your own family. So I say this because I believe America is big enough for everyone’s family, however it looks. But it’s just odd that he doesn’t seem to,” El-Sayed said. “Honestly, let’s go on a podcast, J.D. Let’s go on Joe Rogan. Have the conversation in the open on Joe Rogan. I’d love to do it.”

Outside of Glow Hall, a dive-y music venue in Kalamazoo, El-Sayed’s big tent coalition was already being tested. Upon a mention of the Democratic Socialists of America, one attendee declared the party to be “a do-nothing bunch of jagoffs.” And yet he was still going to vote for El-Sayed, who is not a DSA member but has nonetheless benefited from the group’s energy and organizing on his behalf.

Once inside, Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts rallied the crowd before El-Sayed took the stage in his unofficial campaign uniform: a snug black T-shirt tucked into dark-wash jeans, with bracelets adorning his right wrist and a watch on his left. The crowd knew the drill, engaging in a call-and-response with El-Sayed on the three campaign points he’s been ruthlessly hammering home. “Medicare for … ‘ALL!’ Money out of … ‘POLITICS!’ Money in your … ‘POCKET!’”

El-Sayed said “AIPAC should give me a plaque” for the tens of millions of dollars the pro-Israel lobbying organization and affiliated groups have poured into the race against him, and he drew one of his biggest applause lines by declaring, “This is the money versus the many.” It was a decidedly younger crowd at Glow Hall, where a Palestinian flag adorned the wall, than the one I encountered the previous day at a Stevens event in Traverse City. (There, when former senator Debbie Stabenow, tasked with the role of attack dog, described Twitch streamer and El-Sayed supporter Hasan Piker as “probably the biggest antisemite in the media,” the jab barely registered with attendees.)

MARK TWAIN ONCE LAMENTED the way Washington’s never-ending flow of booze prevented him from attaining proper health and a good night’s sleep.

“Washington is no doubt the boss town in the country for a man to live in who wants to get all the pleasure he can in a given number of months,” Twain, a former congressional reporter and staffer, said in an 1889 interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “But I wasn’t built that way. I don’t want the earth at one gulp.”

Twain reported that his doctor advised him to give up the town’s lifestyle for the sake of his longevity. He died in 1910 at the age of 74.

Many years later, booze remains a major lubricant of formal and informal Washington functions. Indeed, for today’s Capitol Hill staffers and reporters, the prescription for a long and successful career often starts with off-hours drinks.

But it comes with risks, and not just the ones Twain’s doctor warned of. For women, going to the bar brings the potential of being groped—occasionally by a prominent congressman. One female staffer who talked to me for this edition of Press Pass relayed that this happened to her at a bar in the city. She declined to name the member on record, for fear of reprisal, but relayed that she got away from him by swapping seats with a male colleague.

It was a moment notable, in part, for its commonness. In ways big and small, younger women in D.C. make calculated decisions to minimize their risk of harassment by powerful political figures, and they rely on whisper networks to know which lawmakers to be more vigilant around.
