Congratulations, Virginia wine country. 🍾 We are fortunate in Charlottesville to be surrounded by the Monticello AVA and its talented winemakers. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Not everyone is happy about the papal visit to Barcelona. There’s an ongoing teachers strike for higher wages and more state investment in education. Why spend money on Pope Leo’s visit, say Spanish critics, when there’s so much financial need in crucial sectors?
Very enthusiastic public greets Pope Leo in the streets of Barcelona as his popemobile makes it’s way toward Sagrada Familia. I saw Catalan independence flags (and heard some pro independence chants) and Palestinian flags among the Vatican and Spanish flags.

Some Catalan nationalists were concerned that Leo would speak only in Spanish. Catalan-speaking residents in Barcelona and the surrounding autonomous community were pleased that the pope made the effort to speak portions of his homily and words of greeting and dismissal at Mass in Catalan.
There’s fifty-leven different denominations of Christian you can indicate. But if you’re Unitarian, atheist or Wiccan DOD says your religion is “impractical” for the purposes of DOD recognition. You can’t put your religion on your dog tag.
We tried. But no museum with enough resources and responsible curation practices wanted the statue. The only folks who wanted it were those who would display and venerate it in harmful ways. We decided it would be morally irresponsible of us to just ship our toxic waste somewhere else.
At Monday’s 6pm Charlottesville city council meeting, council will act to officially permit future Swords Into Plowshares public art in the park. A show of support will help the @jsaahccville.bsky.social and our community as we move forward to make art that expresses multiracial democracy.
All over the world, the far-right worships tyrants. Madrid’s PP mayor Ayuso links up with her right-wing counterparts in Mexico. They push false historical narratives about the Spanish conquest of the Americas to promote today’s bad policies. Mexico’s leftist president Sheinbaum isn’t having it.
I’ve lived in Cuba for a cumulative 3 years, and the billboards of El Comandante everywhere were and are a constant feature of the public landscape
Drumpf says that the 2017 fascist attack on Charlottesville was funded by SPLC to make him look bad. 😒
Thursday, 6-7:30pm: come together @jsaahccville.bsky.social for a session by @indivisiblecville.bsky.social & @cvilledsa.bsky.social We’ll run some simulations about how to respond, in the moment, to unsafe situations. It’s good to have tactics ready for when problems pop up at protests.

OTD: 9 April 1865, the U.S. Army --including Albemarle County natives John Allen, James Garland & George Lewis, serving with the 127th Infantry of the U.S. Colored Troops-- at Appomattox, VA, defeated Confederate forces, whose leader surrendered to U.S. Gen. (future U.S. President) Ulysses S. Grant.
At Saturday’s @indivisiblecville.bsky.social @cvilledsa.bsky.social People’s Activist Series I’ll speak about the origin of May Day in the 1886 Haymarket Massacre, when Chicago cops attacked activists. We’ll prepare for the May Day natl strike vs. fascism. 2-3:30pm Apr 11 @jsaahccville.bsky.social
Would you believe that I actually have these dates saved in my calendar? 😆 history nerd. My favorite one is next week, April 9:
OTD: April 4, 1865: President Lincoln (accompanied by his son Tad) visited Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capital that Union troops captured the day before. Liberated slaves hailed him in the burnt out streets. Lincoln went to the White House of the Confederacy which Jefferson Davis had fled.
Hey Charlottesville: check out events @jsaahccville.bsky.social to learn and shape how city parks will look in the future. Tonight, Friday 5pm SIP & Sip: wine and snacks and view the Swords Into Plowshares art proposals Tomorrow, Saturday 10am & 12noon: park tours mailchi.mp/jeffschoolhe...
The U.S. Colored Troops were 10% of the Union army, numbering 180,000 soldiers —equal to Lee’s entire Army of Northern Virginia. USCT units were among the first Union forces to march into Richmond, where elated Black residents cheered them in the streets. community.village.virginia.edu/usct/node/91
OTD: April 3, 1865, the liberation of 12,000 enslaved residents of Richmond (30% of population). Confederates burned the munitions in their own capital city before running away from the Union army — led by regiments of the U.S. Colored Troops which included Black men from Albemarle County.
