We’re not going away to his summer so we are having themed menus each week. This week is Spain/Italy. @intruth.bsky.social just ran with it today. All very delish.

Patatas Bravas with potatoes from the garden, pintxos - cheese, roasted pepper and anchovies on bread, tried padron peppers from the greenhouse, in the jar homemade oven dried tomatoes with tomatoes from the garden. Glass of homemade sangria.

Chicken and Calabrian sausage paella. No seafood as only the eldest and I like it.

In things I only recently learnt, the aubergine is part of the nightshade family. Just look at that flower, that clued me in. This is our first year of trying to grow them.

The socktopus is feeling very goth today.

Light blue sock hanger in the shape of an idealised octopus (from Ikea as few years ago) it has 8 arms with 16 pegs. There are 15! black socks hanging from it.
To the left is a bit of the rotary drier, in the background the summerhouse painted forest green, windows and above the neighbours gorgeous flowering cherry.

Me: seeing a military plane and checking flight radar, “Can just hear him in the distance”. Si looking at flight radar “Bloody hell he has done a lot of hoops, either that or he’s trying to draw a willy.” Me: squinting at the screen “that’s evangelical sex ed for you.

En vacances au cœur de la campagne du Norfolk, having a civilised lunch avec mon fils

Outside, having a lunch of moules mariniere, my son’s hand is visible as he puts an empty shell in the bowl. I have a white pasta bowl with lunch in it, there is bread to the left in a napkin, a glass of white wine as I’m on holiday and bougie salt and pepper mills. Out of focus is a summer house in the background, green plants and dry grass. It is my back garden.

Made blackcurrant vodka lads.

Changed the duvet today for the summertime one. Geraniums have been moved outside for summer, winter bedding vanished to the airing cupboard. Laundry drying outside, dinner is marinading. Gin and tonic achieved.

Rock icon's expensive dinner party faux pas - Dave Grohl really loves wine, but was left rather red-faced following a dinner party at a famous actor's house. Nobody else was drinking: "So I'm left with this bottle of wine, and it's so good, I downed it like a Pepsi," the Foo Fighters frontman tells hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett on this week's Dish podcast.
"Then another bottle arrives, and I destroy that bottle, and I'm like: 'This is the best wine I've ever had in my life."
The next day he emailed to thank his host, and ask what the wine was. After discovering it was a vintage Château Haut-Brion, Dave decided to buy some, "So I google it, and holy ****, | just drank $20,000 worth of wine!" Mortified, he emailed to apologise for drinking it all, and his host's response was: 'That's what it's for." Over Spanish-style slow-cooked lamb, Dave also chats about his love of barbecuing, and offers his best advice - don't fiddle with the meat once it's on the grill. "If you're lookin, it ain't cookin, he says.

Too many limes in the fridge can mean only one thing. It’s Marg time. Recipe in the alt.

A margarita in a classic margarita glass, the rim is coated in tajin a mildly spicy chili, lime and salt seasoning. Margarita recipe found in Around the World In 80 Cocktails lime:triple sec:tequila 1:2:3 shake in a cocktail shaker, double strain if you are inclined to, into a chilled glass. We often use our nick and Nora glasses or our old fashioned tumblers depending on mood.

It’s clear outside but directly north of me is a small town so the light pollution makes it very hard to see anything.

Night sky with a 10 second exposure. My car is in the foreground. Then the village war memorial, to the right is an oak tree the sky is glowing with light pollution. There is a faint pinkish tone to some of the sky but is it aurora? I don’t think so.

It continues. The ham won’t stand up so it’s on its side. Si doesn’t like cloves I’m doing the ham unstudded this year. Ham will go in the oven when it’s hot enough.

Cooked gammon joint, skin removed, fat slashed, doused in a sugar, spice, mustard glaze. Waiting to go in the oven. The joint and juices are resting on aluminium foil in a dish.

Spice mix now bashed, with so added pink peppercorns and bay leaves from the garden. Frying them off to release the aromas.

Gammon joint in a cast iron pot with carrots and onions underneath the joint is the spice mix from earlier.

It begins

Collecting of spices ready to be lightly bashed. Seads - Fennel, cumin, coriander, cardamom also cloves, pink and black peppercorns, and star anise. I’ve fresh ginger to the side as well.

Spices on a countertop. Important ones are cloves, star anise, fennel, black pepper, cardamom pods, coriander seeds in ikea mini storage jars. In front of the are an onion, fresh root ginger, a bag with carrots. The countertop is white the tiles behinds are striped in shades of brown (not as ghastly as it sounds)
