Excerpt reading: “Public input into government decisions, including in environmental review procedures, not only restrains the worst tendencies of unaccountable state power but also enhances the capacity of the state itself, by providing valuable feedback to state technocrats about what is working and what isn’t. While turning off these feedback channels may generate a sugar high of quick results, doing so, as state capacity liberals propose, dooms effective governance further down the road. Top-down technocracy is brittle, and availing ourselves of shortcuts around the public is ultimately self-defeating.”

Apparently The Times found a crystal ball that reveals “public benefit” in advance. This nonsense coming from the same people who celebrate ”risk-taking“ in the corporate world

Excerpt from The Times reading: “Laura Trott, the Conservative shadow education secretary, said the grants showed Labour was “not serious about growing the economy”.
“Instead of setting young people up for the future with the right skills and knowledge for life, they’re wasting taxpayers’ money on absurd research projects which make a mockery of what classifies as ‘society’s biggest challenges’,” she said.
Joanna Marchong, investigations campaign manager at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, a lobbying group for low taxes, said: “Blank cheques for academic vanity projects need reining in and funding only going towards research with genuine public benefit.””

From The Guardian: “Black-cab drivers, who have long been threatened by the rise of Uber, appeared unruffled. The general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, Steve McNamara, said: “They are living in fantasy land. We’re probably going to have flying taxis before we have autonomous ones in London.

“Most people haven’t got a robot hoover or a robot lawnmower even though they are absolutely fantastic. Are people who don’t trust a robot to cut their grass or clean their house going to trust one to take their kids to school or drive their elderly mum around?”

McNamara said autonomous taxis were struggling even in San Francisco’s grid layout. “I’m genuinely not worried. Come back to me in 2040,” he said.”
