Familiar coffee machine in the Wienbibliothek at Vienna City Hall.
Adopt a priest, via email. Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, Valtice, Czech Republic.
Born in Vienna, died in Beverly Hills, director Fritz Lang here with Jean-Luc Godard on the set of *The Odyssey.*
Not to throw shade on anyone -- like everything else, it is a tough business. But Austrian weekly *Profil,* which once led with investigative journalism, is becoming a very lost cause.
The Austro-Hungarian Colonization office -- and restaurant -- near Mobile, Alabama, circa 1912. Run by a certain Herr H.K.J. Hanak.
Ganz ohne Berliner geht die Chose nicht. #Innsbruck
Christian Prosl, ex-Austrian Ambassador to U.S. and ex-Director of Consular Section @bmeia.gv.at One of great opening speakers now at "Habsburg International: Austrian Consulates and Consulates" conference. Co-organizers @oeaw.bsky.social & Austrian State Archives. www.oeaw.ac.at/ihb/detail/e...
So many stories... Born in Krnov, in current Czech Republic, Charles Louis Fleischmann created America's first commercial yeast. No Fleischmann, no mass-produced bread. Buried in Parthenon. 3rd great granddaughter is Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos, failed Silicon Valley startup.
Still time for anyone -- including Austrian music legend Stefan Sterzinger, "the pharmacist of anarchy" -- to submit Research Grant application for research/project promoting understanding of historic relationship between U.S. and (Habsburg) Austria. More: botstiberbiaas.org/march-31-202...
Kira Thurman writes that in the 1950s “there were more African American opera singers at the State Opera House than there were white American singers.” Here, Pittsburgh-born Olive Moorefield, a frequent and much-celebrated performer with Marcel Prawy at the Volksoper. And still living.
For further study... While it is repeatedly said in *The Third Man* that Anna Schmidt, the grieving girlfriend of Harry Lime, holds a very professionally forged passport, the actual document reads... "Republique d'Autreich"(?).
"Der gebürtige Wiener Billy Wilder..." So geht die @nzz.ch nach all diesen Jahren mit der österreichisch-amerikanischen Geschichte um. www.nzz.ch/feuilleton/t...
Not exactly the day the music died, but sad to know comic Mozart vendors will soon be banished from Michaelerplatz.
Looking ahead to forthcoming issue of *Journal of Austrian-American History* Articles on 1952 Vienna performance of *Porgy and Bess,* Otto Habsburg in wartime New York, American disorganization in post-1945 Austria, and more. As Captain Beefheart used to say, "I cannot go back to your frownland."
Bekanntlich hat Hollywood auch im Jahr 1933 das Schreckbild wiederbelebt. #KingKong
Václav Horčička writes that, in 1917, at meeting of returned U.S. consuls, Austrian authorities said many emigrants would return after war. Hungary alone expected 300,000. Only Czechs had entirely broken up with Austria. Consuls and Consulates conference -- abstract deadline today.
Peak hate against great Fritz Kreisler, married to an American woman. In 1917, Pittsburgh mayor declared he would gladly convene a jury to judge Kreisler. Eventually, Kreisler canceled all U.S. charity concerts. Hamlet used to say, "It out-Herods Herod. Pray you, avoid it."
Something about the day... Cathedral at Autun in Burgundy.
For those keeping score, journalists and some opinion-makers have made much of leaving it, but official Austria remains committed to the X platform.
Austrian consul at work... In famous 1907 case, Philadelphia consul Thodorovich sued Franz Joseph Beneficial Association to stop Association using emperor's image in promotional materials. Association founded in 1887 by Jewish Austrian subjects. Continues today as Pannonia Beneficial Association.
Curious if a great cooking photographer will ever rise to challenge of making the most American dish of all -- the "three sisters" (beans, corn, squash) -- look attractive.
Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies offers travel fellowships ($1000) to attend Austrian Studies Association Conference, Salzburg, May 2026. Papers must address US-Austria relationship, incl. historic Habsburg Austria. www.austrian-studies.org/travel-grants/ Stuttgart Kunstmuseum...
As Bob Dylan once said, "you can always come back, but you can't come back all the way."
Letting Emperor Franz Joseph know about it from Nebraska. With a Lincoln stamp no less.
