Jenny Yacovissi
@jbywrites
Author, reader, critic, president of Washington Independent Review of Books (which you should read and follow). I’m all about the freedom to read & learn. Moms Demand Action volunteer. Coming to grips that my “golden years” will be spent in The Opposition.
The joy of getting to hang out with one of your favorite authors is just one of the many reasons to come to @librarycongress.bsky.social #NatBookFest. Thanks, Angie Kim! @penfaulkner.bsky.social @wirobooks.bsky.social
The line to get into @penfaulkner.bsky.social Angie Kim’s writing workshop, 40 minutes ahead of time, snakes around the ground floor. #natbookfest attendees making good choices! @librarycongress.bsky.social @wirobooks.bsky.social
Hanging out with 4000 of my closest book-loving friends to enjoy Kate McKinnon discussing—and acting out—her middle grade books. She thanked us all for skipping the President’s street race today to celebrate reading instead. @librarycongress.bsky.social @wirobooks.bsky.social
I’m in DC today at the @librarycongress.bsky.social #NationalBookFestival. People who say reading is dead need to come hang out here. We all know better. @wirobooks.bsky.social
Sure, Tom Hanks read the audio book of THE DUTCH HOUSE, and Meryl Streep did the same for TOM LAKE, but nothing compares to hearing the author herself read WHISTLER. Find reviews of all three Ann Patchett books at @wirobooks.bsky.social. www.washingtonindependentreviewofbooks.com/bookreview/w...
Exercise the franchise! Every race, every ballot, every election cycle—be an informed, engaged citizen, which is a crucial element of democracy. (I love living in a state that encourages *all* eligible people to vote and makes it easy and accessible.)
On today's @thebulwark.com with @timmiller.bsky.social, @warnock.senate.gov reminder to voters, "I walk among the giants of the civil rights movement. I'm gonna fight for you. But you don't get to outsource democracy. All of us have to fight." Amen! An engaged citizenry is how we keep our democracy.
Out today--the founding read you know you need! THE DEMOCRACY WE MUST KEEP, brought to you by everyone's favorite historian of the founders, David O. Stewart. Jon Meacham calls it "an important and timely read." Remind yourself why an engaged citizenry is the key to having and holding a democracy.
My 1st parade of the election season in Anne Arundel County, MD. Marching with a whole bunch of Democratic candidates (like my good friend Joan Barone Cole, District 31 Delegate) & incumbents. Remember: state and local elections have a *huge* impact on your life. VOTE every ballot, every race.
Every year, we say, “Best conference ever!” because it’s true every year. But no time to rest on our laurels—we’ve got a daily publication to get out to you! (Many thanks to @aranshetterly.bsky.social, @margotleeshetterly.bsky.social, and Eric Dezenhall for a brilliant keynote discussion!)
I’m a bit behind on @newyorker.com, but finally read @ronanfarrow.bsky.social and Andrew Marantz’s recent article. Honestly, does Sam Altman remember a single conversation he’s ever had? Perhaps he is himself a stateless program, buffering no memory of any sentence he has uttered before.
These are the two boats I built with Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis, MD, a campus of Maine's Wooden Boat School. "Eat The Peach" is the sliding seat wherry and "Joy Finder" is the skiff, which now has a little Torqeedo electric motor. (I can't take credit for the gorgeous finish work, though.)
Why did it take me so long to notice that @hcrichardson.bsky.social is wearing a Wooden Boat hat? My powers of observation are obviously failing me. Excellent choice in fashion accessories, Heather!
Hanging out with a few hundred thou of my best friends in Washington, DC--just a day's work in building to 3.5% of the population in committed opposition! #NoKings @momsdemandaction.org @indivisible.org
Coming to @awpwriter.org's #AWP26? Visit your friends from @wirobooks.bsky.social at Booth T845. We'll have some drawings & WWC discounts, & we're just generally fun and chill to hang around in the mayhem. Also, remember our new slogan: "The Washington Post doesn't cover books anymore--but WE do!"
For *years,* the Combined Federal Campaign offered federal employees, contractors, & others an easy way to donate to a wide selection of approved charities. Just as @wirobooks.bsky.social was set to make the list, this Administration has shuttered the program. Burning it all down, just because.
Hey, @leahgreenberg.bsky.social and @ezralevin.bsky.social, I’m insulted on your behalf at the way @indivisible.org is characterized in this @newyorker.com article. We know we’re doing grassroots organizing & building the muscle for a long fight to regain our democracy. I guess we’ll just show them.
Not a peep on the @washingtonpost.com home page about the bloodbath that Bezos & Co just wreaked on the entire paper. Absolutely NO MORE books coverage. So here's your reminder that @wirobooks.bsky.social is still here, all day, every day, with no paywall. It's good to be *independent*. Bookmark us!
Getting ready to suit up for Maryland Moms Demand Action’s Advocacy Day at the state house this Thursday, 2/5 to meet with legislators about common sense gun safety measures. Join us as we rally to raise our voices to end gun violence. @momsdemandaction.org
It's a classic authoritarian power play: They lie to you. You know they're lying, & they know you know they're lying. It proves they don't care that you don't believe them, & that it doesn't matter that you don't believe them. They know they can get away with it. This admin=Stalin/Putin playbook.
Two months until the next #NoKings protests. It's up to us to increase the pressure every single day against their authoritarian takeover of our democracy. Keep turning the screws. Do not give them a moment's rest.
Understand that all of this fascist nightmare is being done in the name of the American people. If you don’t agree with what they are doing, you must speak out against it. Silence is complicity. And is there a single word from anyone in this administration that we are willing to believe?
Hasn't tiny Nazi Greg Bovino and all the rest of this cast of miscreants ever seen the movie? Do they not understand that they are the ones whose faces melt off at the end? YOU ARE THE BAD GUYS. YOU WILL NOT TRIUMPH. And we will revel in your defeat.
“Are we walking out today?” “You bet we are! I’ve got the signs—let’s go!” #FreeAmericaWalkout
When folks say we’ll never end gun violence in the US, I say, You know what you never hear in a restaurant anymore? “Smoking or non-smoking?” Things are only impossible until they aren’t, because enough people work (long and hard enough) to change reality. @momsdemand.bsky.social
Yes, @karaswisher.bsky.social with @timmiller.bsky.social on @thebulwark.com! Both the Cybertruck and ID. Buzz turn heads; the difference is that when people see the Buzz they *smile*.
I'm only through the introduction of @johnfugelsang.bsky.social's SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND HATE, and I'm already shouting in agreement with the author's points. When people present themselves as Christians, I always want to ask, "Are you a Jesus Christian or a Trump 'Christian'?"
Per this morning's @washingtonpost.com, if this is an accurate quote from Kristi Noem--"I will consider your asking me to resign as an endorsement of my work."--color me flabbergasted that she understands the proper use of a gerund.
Finally, a tiny bit of good news that we really hope stays in place.
Started it Tuesday night, finished it Thursday night—just before this first snow in DC. @watchusfallbook.bsky.social
