It’s been seven years since Mahershala Ali walked out at the end of a Marvel panel at Comic Con to reveal blockbuster news that seemed both shocking and like a slam dunk: he was going to be the MCU’s Blade. The announcement was met with rapturous applause in the room and universal praise online (including one writer—OK, it was me—who simply tweeted, “HOLY F—.”) Almost a decade later, Ali made a brief, voice-only cameo in the post-credit scene for the MCU’s Eternals— and that was it.

At this point, Ali has officially moved on. “If they wanted to do it, we would've done it,” he tells GQ of Marvel’s failure to launch his Blade movie. (Marvel’s Kevin Feige has blamed the delay on a script that never came together, while admitting that he felt like “a gigantic loser and a failure” after the project foundered.) But in the course of his long, ultimately unsuccessful journey to bring the vampire hunter back to the big screen, Ali acquired the necessary skills—and connected with the perfect director—to make a film he says might be the most rewarding work of his career, which is quite the bold statement from a two-time Oscar winner.

"It's your turn."

The bad? You can see the seams where this was laid out as, if not originally intended to be, a new season of the show. There's not realistically a lot here to justify this not just being Season 4. The Dave Filoni cameo(s) are a little distracting. Sigourney Weaver is sorely underutilized. There's an obvious expectation that you already know some of the characters from Rebels who appear, so they don't get huge introductions.

The good? Everything else. I'm sorry, but you're just being weird if you hate this. It's just a fun romp with good action. It's good to see Mando being the biggest badass in the room again, and then to see him immediately get put in his place by a fight that I almost expected to have a Dark Souls style health bar. Grogu gets some development, and the nature of his and Mando's relationship moves forward a bit. Rotta is a spectacular character.

It's not a 5/5, but it's far from a 1/1. I do wish it had been a little bigger, a little grander, a little more epic, but I also had a blast with this. It's a perfectly fine popcorn movie, and sometimes that's all a movie needs to be.

Delaney actually did a book the year before this in the same art style! "Adventures in the DC Universe," not really related to the DCAU but clearly leaning into it. I remember it being fairly popular (Wizard loved this book at the time), but it only lasted 19 issues and an annual.

Look, Absolute Batman has, in general, been a very good book with a lot of really cool ideas, but the scale of this slice of the universe is just totally fucked. Everything is just taller by an order of magnitude. Maybe I'm the weird one; people seem to be digging it, but I find it overwhelming.
