I found the newspaper article about my great grandfather's naturalization in 1924. Below it, this advert for "Radium Active Ointment" rec'd for piles, eczema, etc. We shouldn't romanticize the past for a lot of reasons, and "they were putting radioactive ointment on their assholes" is one of them.
I remember seeing this at the time but I haven’t been able to find the original since:
