to achieve common goals on a large scale, and the legal challenges faced by neighborhoods,
peri-urban gardens represent a hub of upward governance, territorial development, food
sovereignty, and environmental sustainability due to their multifunctional nature and
agroecological perspective. This provides citizens with a space for decision-making on the
management of land declared at risk and on the gardens themselves, strengthening social
cohesion in the territories. This study, which uses qualitative and exploratory methods such
as case studies and actor mapping, aims to assess the potential of peri-urban collective
gardens in informal settlements in Bogotá, in terms of their contribution to participatory
territorial governance through a geographical approach. Data were obtained through
interviews, content analysis, and direct observations in the relevant communities,
complemented by interactions with representatives of government authorities. The results
suggest that these gardens could strengthen territorial governance and improve social
cohesion in the region, with the potential to enhance informal neighborhoods.

Os polinizadores são fundamentais para a resiliência das funções societais vitais, a
competitividade e a segurança alimentar da Europa. Os polinizadores são essenciais
para a produção agrícola, a reprodução e evolução das plantas silvestres, a resiliência
dos ecossistemas, a segurança alimentar, as culturas alimentares, a conservação da
natureza terrestre, a subsistência, a saúde e o bem-estar humanos, a competitividade,
a economia, a estética da paisagem e a identidade local, o sentimento de pertença e a
ligação à natureza, contribuindo, em última instância, para a segurança e a estabilidade
política. A dependência da Europa em relação aos polinizadores aumentou nas últimas
décadas.
A integração da salvaguarda dos polinizadores nas diferentes áreas de política que
os afetam é indispensável para alcançar as metas juridicamente vinculativas da UE
relativas ao restauro da diversidade de polinizadores e à reversão do seu declínio. As
principais áreas de política que devem integrar a salvaguarda dos polinizadores
incluem a agricultura, o ambiente, os produtos químicos, a investigação e a inovação,
o comércio, as finanças, o planeamento, a legislação e a educação.
A Europa possui uma grande riqueza de espécies de polinizadores selvagens, mas
estas encontram-se ameaçadas por múltiplas pressões. As borboletas diurnas e
noturnas constituem os grupos mais numerosos de polinizadores selvagens, seguidas
pelos escaravelhos, pelas vespas e abelhas e pelas moscas. Todos são essenciais para
os ecossistemas naturais e muitos são cruciais para as paisagens cultivadas, a
agricultura e a floresta. Muitas espécies de polinizadores selvagens estão em declínio e
muitas são exclusivas do continente europeu, o que confere aos países europeus uma
responsabilidade particular de agir. As abelhas-do-mel sob gestão apícola são
consideradas animais de produção e não estão em declínio, mas enfrentam problemas
de saúde das colónias em muitos países europeus.

El campo, sin polinizadores, estaría condenado a desaparecer. Con el objetivo de preservar a estos insectos, que desempeñan una labor vital en el ecosistema, nace el laboratorio ‘vivo’ de la Universidad de Murcia (UMU) dentro del proyecto europeo ‘Butterfly’. Allí, lejos de paredes de hormigón y estanterías de frascos, abejas silvestres y melíferas serán las protagonistas de un ensayo que busca adelantarse al declive de estos ingenieros del ecosistema.

En marzo de 2025, la UMU alumbró este espacio experimental —el único ‘vivo’ en España de los seis destinados por ‘Butterfly’— que sucederá hasta 2029. Bajo la coordinación general del profesor Jeroen van der Sluijs, de la

Universidad de Bergen (Noruega), el consorcio europeo, con más de siete millones de euros de financiación de Horizon Europe (239.075 euros para la UMU), aspira a evaluar la labor de polinización y prever las consecuencias de su merma en términos económicos, ecológicos y sociales.

Diecinueve universidades e institutos, un museo, una oenegé, un organismo nacional de agricultura y dos consultorías comparten la ambición de crear puentes entre ciencia, campo y políticas de sostenibilidad.

La responsable de este hito local es la profesora Pilar de la Rúa Tarín, líder del grupo de investigación de la UMU. Junto a ella, el investigador Álvaro Urueña y los técnicos de laboratorio Antonio José García y Saray Mañas conforman el cuarteto que insuflará vida al laboratorio. Su misión: poner a prueba estrategias para preservar la biodiversidad de abejas —tanto la de la miel como la de especies solitarias— en los cultivos de almendros, clave en la economía regional.

Eight EU projects urge action on pollinator decline
A new white paper from eight major EU-funded pollinator projects warns that the resilience of Europe’s vital societal functions and food security are at stake if the EU fails to halt and reverse wild pollinator declines, and to support managed pollinators. Behind the report is an interdisciplinary team of 135 leading researchers with expertise ranging from ecosystem ecology, pollinator ecology, ecological economics, social science, environmental history, behavioural psychology, political science, and environmental law. The report flags the EU’s siloed governance structures and resulting policy incoherence as the major barrier to pollinator restoration. It states that the EU and its Member States urgently need to act by making Pollinator Stewardship an explicit and measurable top-priority across policies on agriculture, environment, chemicals, research and innovation, trade, finance, planning, legislation, and education.

The report diagnoses the looming pollinator crisis as arising from a dysfunctional relationship between humans and nature. Seeing humans as separate from and superior to nature, and thinking of nature as an object for human use as a resource, reinforces institutional structures that exploit nature for short-term individual and material gain. This leads to unsustainable agricultural practices that risk jeopardising the resilience of the ecosystems on which humanity critically depends.

There is more at stake than food security, the report warns. Indeed, many of Europe’s economic supply chains and sectors depend on pollination of flowering plants. Think of medicinal plants, food supplements, biomass energy crops, biomaterials, textiles, fodder, cosmetics, decoration, art, culture, and tourism.
