G.K.: Differentials, mathematical ones. Let's say we have a function. Like "X = 2Y". If you define one of the values, it defines the other one as well, right? In other words, one of them depends on the other. That's yuri, isn't it. A function is a pairing. You get it, right?

R.M.: Yes.

I.M.: I do.

G.K.: A differential represents how f(x) changes with respect to changes of X. When one of the women is going through a change, how does that change her partner to answer that you need to calculate the derivative of the function.

I.M.: Yuri can be represented with formulas, you're saying.

Dorothy Burlingham and Anna Freud

Dorothy Burlingham and Anna Freud were partners in life and work. Burlingham was born in New York in 1891, into wealth and privilege as the daughter of the heir to Tiffany & Co., New York. She married and had four children before moving to Vienna to seek psychoanalytic treatment for her son.

In 1927, Burlingham began analysis with Sigmund Freud, and in 1932 she became an Associate Member of the Vienna Society, presenting a paper which drew on her own reactions to having her child in analysis with Anna. She and Anna became inseparable. working on joint publications and co-founding the Jackson Nurser in Vienna in 1937.

After Sigmund and Martha Freud's deaths, Dorothy moved into this house at Maresfield Gardens where she lived until her death in 1979. The pair also co-owned holiday homes in Suffolk and Co. Cork, Ireland. Both specialising in child psychoanalysis, together they ran the Hampstead Nurseries, undertook research, co-authored books and travelled widely.

Many visitors to the Museum are curious to know whether Anna and Dorothy's relationship was platonic or romantic. While the to continues to spark fascination, there is a lack of archival evidence define their relationship in these terms.

A PSYCHOANALYTIC JOURNEY

Dorothy Burlingham

Dorothy Burlingham (1891-1979) was a child psychoanalyst. She was Anna Freud's life long friend and partner, and together they co-founded the Hampstead War Nurseries (1941) and co-authored Infants without Families (1943).

In 1914 Dorothy married Robert Burlingham and had four children, before separating from her husband in 1921. In 1925, hoping to find a psychoanalytic cure for her son's psychosomatic skin disorder, Dorothy moved to Vienna with her children, who all entered into psychoanalysis with Anna Freud. Dorothy and Anna became friends, and in 1927, Dorothy took up analysis with Sigmund Freud which lasted until his death.

Dorothy moved into 20 Marefield Gardens in 1940. What was once her bedroom is now known as the Anna Freud Room. In 1932, she became an Associate Member of the Vienna Society, presenting a paper on 'Child Analysis and the Mother' which drew on her own reactions to having her child in analysis. The paper and Dorothy's role may well have fed into Anna's insistence on the importance of the parent in the child's analysis.

Dorothy and Anna's closeness is underlined by their ashes resting side by side in the Freud family corner of Golders Green Crematorium.

In 1926 while living in London, Barker received a letter addressed to a different Colonel Barker, inviting him to join the National Fascisti. Barker replied to the misdirected letter with the missive "why not", reasoning that membership of what was a macho group would help him pose as a man.[2] He lived at the National Fascisti headquarters in Earl's Court where he worked as secretary for the group's leader Henry Rippon Seymour, also involving himself in training young members in boxing and fencing.[2] Barker involved himself in the kind of rough-housing that became the hallmark of the group and later recalled that "I used to go out with the boys to Hyde Park and we had many rows with the Reds."[2] That he was transgender was never picked up on by his fellow members.[2]

In 1927, he was brought before the Old Bailey on charges of possessing a forged firearm certificate after Rippon Seymour had pulled Barker's revolver on another member, Charles Eyres, in a dispute over party funds. "Colonel Barker" was found not guilty and left the group soon after the trial.[4]
