Recently read Carthage A New History by Eve MacDonald, in it she talks about some of the earliest attempts to circomnavigate Africa (from Greece) and how those journeys inspired stories like The Iliad and Odyssey. I just think this shit is neat, how mind blowing it must have been.

and Hanno was not the first to explore the coastal regions of Africa beyond the Mediterranean. While Hanno’s tale is unique as the only surviving personal account that claims to have been written originally by a Carthaginian, a story from the sixth century bce pre-dates it. The earlier tale, told by the Greek historian Herodotus, recounts a Phoenician ship that circumnavigated Africa on an expedition funded by the Egyptian pharaoh Necho II of the 26th dynasty (r. 610–595 bce). Necho belonged to the last native dynasty to rule Egypt, which ended with the Achaemenid Persian conquest in 525 bce, and this tale of exploration was one of his crowning glories. Herodotus explains that

Libya’s geography [Africa is called Libya here] is surrounded by the sea on all sides except where it meets Asia. A detail initially observed and communicated by the Egyptian king Necho. After completing

the construction of a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea, he dispatched Phoenician sailors along it, with instructions to keep going until the journey passed through the Pillars of Heracles on their return voyage and reached the northern sea and eventually Egypt. Herodotus’ account is sketchy on the details but describes how the voyage took place with the ship sailing along the east coast of Africa, around the south and back up the west. This was slow going, and each autumn that the ships were at sea the expedition would put into a harbour, plant seeds to grow a harvest and then take their food and carry on. There were many sophisticated ancient societies along the east coast of Africa in this period, those that were linked across the Indian Ocean through trade.5 The Phoenician ships had first passed through the canal heading into the Red Sea and then down the coast of Africa. What is curious about Herodotus is that he questioned

the validity of his own tale – and ironically, buried in this assertion, is our confirmation of the journey. ‘There they said (what some may believe, though I do not) that in sailing around Libya [Africa] they [the Phoenicians] had the sun on their right-hand side.’ For the ships heading south of the equator and around the southern point of Africa, today called the Cape of Good Hope, would indeed have kept the sun on their right in the southern hemisphere. Herodotus did not know the world was round.6

The triumphant Phoenician ships returned to Egypt and their grateful pharaoh after three years of journeying. There are many questions about this voyage that we cannot answer, but the mystique and legends

Finally finished Perfect Tides and dear God but it hits a little too close to home for me as a kid who had no friends for most of high school. Like this is really what it was like man. Literally nothing is happening to you but you are falling apart with every human interaction
