My assertion is that we are seeing the effects of warm oceanic waters brought in from low latitudes to high latitudes from both the Indian and Pacific oceans. These warm waters upwell into the region. I did a video on this some time ago. Perhaps these diagrams will help illustrate:
Here's a similar graphic except it shows temp differential (the N Pac was OHC in J) in the N Atlantic. The Med is really hot. Med waters becomes the NAIW and goes to the arctic ocean via Fram. Expect arctic ocean waters to heat up. The 2 graphics I posted are the work of Lijeng Chang et al.
Agree. As stratification intensifies, sequestration of heat (and CO2) to depth reduces. OHC goes to polar regions, melt sea ice, delay its formation, diffuse upwards to the atmosphere adding heat energy there as well as increasing SST. Take a look at this figure showing the stored OHC in the N Pac.
