Organizers gave out stickers naming 923 children who died at Bessborough. I wore the name of seven week old infant Thomas Nolan, who died of marasmus, or severe malnutrition, nearly a century ago. In the news: www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2026...
And on the lighter side, we spotted the Cork leg of the World Naked Bike Ride a few minutes ago in the city centre. Related article quoted below.
Can’t see them all here but it looked like more than 1,000 people at the “No building over Bessborough” rally and march ending just now in Cork city centre.
Decisions, decisions. Yesterday I visited the Jameson Distillery in Midleton but I did not order from the bottom line.
Popped over to London for a journalism conference. Here’s my obligatory walkabout photo from this morning.
And then looking back last hour from atop that church, St. Anne’s in the Shandon section of the city.
Been there, done that, got the tee shirt… today! Finally visited legendary Spindizzy Records in Dublin. Pics: Performers who played there. Video: My fave of course… youtu.be/zKlA8OvN_mE?...

It's going to take some getting used to that summer feels so different here in Cork but I'm going to be okay if I never feel 101°F (38.3°C) weather again. How did I ever work outside for so many years in Philadelphia when I was younger?
My first hike up St. Patrick’s Hill and look back down over Cork city centre today:
We topped off my first week back in Ireland with Christy Moore and 5,000 new neighbors in Cork last night. The experience was so much more than I ever could have imagined or begin to describe. Just a privilege to witness. And with so much history and culture baked in. Every day is a school day here.
That’ll do it, Philly. #35years I grabbed the selfie last night but I’m boarding now. ✈️
I'm literally struggling not to spend one of my last two days in the States taking Amtrak to Washington just to see this. It feels like the canary in the coal mine, warning us of the lethal population-level consequences of leaving health, education, defense and everything else in the hands of fools.
My final week in Philadelphia has been a handful. Three days to go. Almost almost ready.
I know I feel safer. Security thingies parked illegally in Center City Philly rn for some reason.
It was lonely. Going for the whole Pax et Lux thing now. More to come after I move.
Sweet summer sunset over Merchant Exchange Building in Old City Philadelphia a few minutes ago, plus just a little Photoshop.
Delighted to spot new bike lane in Old City Philly just now. Maybe new today? Of course there was also a PWD truck blocking it, driving over the flex posts and leaving the first ugly marks.
Another last Philly walkabout: This morning at Reading Terminal Market, which I will soon be trading in for Cork’s English Market.
