Photograph of tiles arranged in a pattern that at first glance displays six-fold rotational symmetry. Prominently featured are twelve-pointed stars, of which about half contain a repeated geometric motif consistent with six-fold rotational symmetry but lacking mirror symmetry. The other half contain a repeated motif of islamic calligraphy. If all the stars were to contain the geometric motif, the overall pattern would conform to the p6 space group. With the calligraphic motif present, the symmetry reduces to the p1 space group.

Black and white photograph looking back from the end of a long wooden jetty toward a largely intact stone-built castle occupying the left half of frame. The curtain wall rises directly from a rocky outcrop and is pierced by a gate from which the jetty emerges. Behind this, a large square keep, with a rounded turret forming its left-most corner, can be seen alongside the gable end of another tall building. Part of the castle's main entrance (and later buildings external to the castle) are visible on the far side of the jetty. Beneath the walls and jetty, the waters of the Firth of Forth are calm and bounded by the shoreline of Blackness Bay. The village of Blackness lies along this bay and can be seen stretching toward the right of frame. The sky is white and featureless.
