Prototyping a horror RPG and really debating using Sweet Home's perspective for the tile set instead of the more popular Zelda style. It just feels more imposing.

Everything is an Expression

In Verse, there are no statements—everything is an expression that produces a value. This creates a highly composable system where any piece of code can be used anywhere a value is expected.

# Even control flow produces values
Result := if (Condition[]) then "yes" else "no"

# Loops are expressions
Multiply := for (X : Array) { X * 42 }
Failure as Control Flow

Instead of boolean conditions and exceptions, Verse uses failure as a primary control flow mechanism. Expressions can succeed (producing a value) or fail (producing no value), enabling natural control flow patterns:

ValidateInput[Data] # Square brackets indicate that this function may fail
ProcessData(Data) # Data is only processed if valid, parentheses mean must succeed

It's not *as* bad when you actually scroll down. On top of that, AI is banned for all games sold through the actual Playdate Catalog.

**Our Stance:**
AI is not prohibited from the server. Games made with AI are not banned form being shared or discussed about.

That said, we believe human-made art produces better games, and we are committed to supporting the artists, writers, musicians, and programmers in our community. If you choose to share your project that used generative AI, expect to be nudged towards human-made alternatives.

Numerous well-regarded members of this community, past and present, have made excellent games that started development with some AI, and we don’t think we would be in a better place if those members had not had a place to learn and grow.

**Rules:**
Normal rules around spamming apply, so if someone is putting out lots of slop games, we will take action.

Open discussion, and respectful disagreement, are welcomed and encouraged. Nobody learns by being talked down to or called names, so the rules of “be nice” are unchanged. Please review the server rules for more clarification. This should be an unambiguous rule, so if you are in violation, expect to be timed out without a warning.

**New Tag:**
All games in <#1082761041336877086> that have Generative AI *in their final released version* must now use the **[🤖 AI]** tag on their release post. Developers who are found to have lied will be banned.

**Resources:**
We have a dedicated <#1174267156330983465> forum to connect with other artists, musicians, programmers, and other creators in this server. There are also various help channels for types of programming related to Playdate, where you can learn and work with others on your projects without relying on generative AI.

We are also preparing a collection of free resources, from tile sets to programming tutorials, that will be hosted on the Playdate Community Wiki and can be added to and expanded upon over time.

Made some improvements to this. Now using bilinear interpolation and a chunk system. Instead of using the entire CPU to render a 400x400 tile map, this gets me a 32k x 32k map at 23% CPU usage ^-^. Don'task about the token count. #gamedev #pico8

LRT: I'm only making a tiny Pico8 game, but I think my biggest and most obvious wins are the enemy designs. I made the player an angel and needed demons for it to fight. Researching demonology means my stuff looks like this instead of being little red guys with horns
