The smoke from the Canadian wildfires appears to have arrived over the mid-Atlantic. There's been a faint scent of burning- not as severe as 3 years ago - all the way in on my morning commute and the sky is not only overcast but hazy. This is Little River Turnpike in Annandale, Virginia.

...many of the first "live" fashion photographs were taken at Longchamp and its sister course Auteuil, and have become invaluable documents of what people wore in the era. This is probably one of the most famous such photographs in fashion history.

Three fashion models - called "mannequins" in those days - promenade at the Longchamp race course in Paris on the occasion of the Prix du Prince de Galles race, wearing dresses designed by Jeanne Margarine-Lacroix. The clothes created a sensation, not to mention a storm of controversy (the models were accused by some spectators of parading around half-naked and wearing excessively low necklines), but within months, the new styles had swept the Western world, one of the most rapid style changes in fashion history (to this day the event is still called the "Great Fashion Shift", dividing the Edwardian era into two distinct phases couture-wise).

As I just found out, having perused the Wikipedia article, even left-wing revolutionaries have used the Totenkopf. Platner could, for instance, have altered his tattoo to this, and only right-wingers would have cried foul:

Used to own both Maisie DVD box sets, maybe I should get them again (they're still fairly cheap online). One of those movies, "Maisie Goes To Reno" (1944), has the dazzling young Ava Gardner in one of her first (small) roles. Sothern herself was drop-dead gorgeous.

TIL that Zelensky portrayed Napoleon in a 2008 movie. As a Napoleonic fanboy, this pleases me immeasurably, not least because Zelensky does bear a creditable physical resemblance to the original. Though I'm not so sure about his salmon-colored duds. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rzhevsk...

Hungarian-born movie actress Ilona Massey, #BOTD 1910, in "Love Happy" (1949) with Groucho and Harpo Marx. This was her last major film role, as well as the last Marx Brothers movie - and it was also one of Marilyn Monroe's first screen appearances in a small walk-on role.

What's hilarious is that, two years after the divorce, the couple co-starred in a movie with a rather apposite title..."Death of a Scoundrel".
