Jaclyn and I have grown much closer through sharing this task. She found his original wedding ring. It had been hidden away. I've taken to wearing it on my right hand. It's the only ring of his that actually fits: his fingers were thin, or mine are fat.
We have been winding down the remains of the life my parents created. I have been back several times to help clear the house for sale. This has been an experience in dynastic archaeology. Heirlooms recovered, books donated, knick-knacks trashed, furniture dispersed, secrets uncovered.
The twelve months since that day have been a strange process. I am an orphan now. It is different than when my mother died. I think about my father every day. I am not a believer nor am I superstitious. Even so I can feel his presence, his humor, his fingerprints and trolling and planning.
My niece Katheryn and I discovered him thus: she touched his hand, I saw her eyes, I hugged her, everyone in the house suddenly knew.
A hospice nurse visited in the early afternoon. Afterwards, I pulled everyone into another room for a short meeting about what to expect going forward. This singular five-minute period that no-one was sitting by his side was when he chose to cross the veil.
On the morning of August 1st the house was filled with family and folk, alive with activity and bright with sun despite the somber occasion.
I was on overnight watch duty when his death rattle began. I called my siblings to say that we were in the final stages and that they should come. They did, and then nieces and nephews, and in the morning friends, business partners, and extended family. Someone brought donuts.
He had been diagnosed with metastatic cancer in May of 2025. I flew home to take care of him for most of June that year, finished a move to Oregon at the beginning of July, and returned to West Virginia when he entered hospice two weeks later. As a family we managed his death in shifts.
Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains.
my 13yo niece has a phone and it's her address book dumps to my sister's b/c of monitoring software. niece's contacts override sister's, so now i'm in both phones as "mr. cool dude"
I brought this silver prayer wheel back from kathmandu in 2000 and it tarnished to almost black over the years. wife polished it today. i forgot how gorgeous it is.
