Ripening berries are a sure sign that autumn is on its way. Winterberry Holly, Virginia Creeper, and Black Chokeberry are still green but are enlarging by the day and will be ready to be consumed by migrating birds in a few weeks. #birds #nativeplants
A lot has changed in 5 years, the year I started gardening with #nativeplants. The birch tree out front went from an 18” tall sapling to a 25’ tree in no time. The lawn is almost gone, only a strip that I use for a pathway remains.
Cardinal Flower, Allegheny Monkeyflower, Boneset, and Jewelweed all in bloom in a marsh I’ve been restoring along the Charles River. After the peak of today’s heat, I have some purple loosestrife to pull before it goes to seed, but there isn’t much left after repeated pulling for 4 seasons.
Blue lobelia popped today. The cardinal flowers are in peak bloom. One of my favorite #nativeplants duos
Sounds of late summer. The katydids are so loud they are drowning out the crickets.

I’ve finally hit the point where there are more violets than grass in the lawn. 8 years of no pesticides or fertilizer will do that. #nativeplants
The mourning doves had one fledgling and have already began building on top of their old nest in preparation for another egg. This little one is now mostly independent from its parents
I’m a little jealous of this Serviceberry in my neighborhood, which is in peak bloom. It has to be close to 30 years old. #nativeplants

I biked the marathon route to work Monday morning and it was great because the roads were empty. Despite a frosty start the sun was out and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom.
Happy #earthday Bluesky. It’s been a while since I posted pictures of my garden but things are finally coming back to life. I planted a Red Maple (Acer rubrum) sapling as part of my efforts to make this planet a better place for all. There is only one earth and we need to take care of it.
I must be doing something right, as there’s two pairs of chickadees and a pair of doves nesting in my tiny 1/5 of an acre urban plot
