John (he/him) aka. John Berkeley; Leovinas. UK-based writer of SFF, player of RPGs, Classics/archaeology/ancient history PhD, process/telecoms specialist. The sort of gay lefty Liberal your mother warned you about. Views my own, etc. (no TERFs or AI, ta)
Not that I'm childish, you understand, but what an eye-catching combination.
A few glorious days in Whitby to blow away the cobwebs. A rail ticket from the Blasted Wastes of the South would have been £226 - but to York was only £80, and the bus from York to Whitby was through stunning countryside and was the princely sum of £3. Highly recommend it.
I know that Christopher Nolan has made his film again, and this time it's The Odyssey (but with American accents). Whether you see the film or not, I urge you to read the book. There are some great translations, but the magical, affecting Wilson translation is by far the best. Do read it! 🛶
I remembered that not only can I make biscuits, but I can make whatever sort I want. So, I had a go at caraway-nut shortbread - they came out tasting honeyed and adult. And with that, back to writing. ...Maybe with a cup of tea and a biscuit, though.
EXT - The town square. The BAKER steps up and reveals his new creation. BAKER: "...And I shall call it: a Victoria sponge!" THE CROWD whispers excitedly to each other: "A punge! A punge! A victorious punge!"
We had my aunt Wendy's memorial service today. She was brilliant. My cousins spoke wonderfully. In 1989, Victor Zorza recruited Wendy to help set up Hospice #1, the first in Russia, and teach palliative care. Now, there are over 170 there. What a legacy. community.tiffingirls.org/news/alumnae...
Some days call for writing in the shade. Cold drink mandatory; pigeons and squirrels optional.
Surprising nobody, it turns out I'm a progressive Liberal (in the British, not American, sense of the term). I'm often sceptical of quizzes like this, but this one seems reasonably robust... Take the quiz: quiz.jmoxley.co.uk
🧵 I've had a lot of worried messages from less-political friends about Reform. They aren't infallible: I'm proud that my old delivery spatula helped keep them out of Reading. Build community. Stand in solidarity. Call them out when you can. And don't let fear stop you from acting, or creating. 1/5
This really does look very good in person. (Glad we got to see it before it's inevitably defaced or destroyed by some moron, or removed by a humour and irony-less local council, in either case because we can't have nice things...)
The most recent meme in your camera roll describes your current mental state. (I mean. Not wrong, but still. ...I feel called-out.)
Nice to remember that there were people up there the other day.
There is something very pleasing about bluebells, and the time of year when you pass by some woods and get flashes of purple and blue between the trunks.
I Kickstarted Defy the Gods ages ago - delighted it's arrived. Ancient Near East themed ttRPG with overtly queer punky themes and custom cuneiform dice. Might just make a cup of tea and dive in... #ttrpg #DefytheGods
Less doomscrolling, more bloomscrolling, people. #flowersofbluesky
Hard agree. A series that had a big impact on me as a kid was definitely a fever dream - a peak '90s Polish-Australian post-apocalyptic alternate world portal fantasy TV series called Spellbinders with a fabulous female antagonist and really interesting worldbuilding. No-one I know remembers it.
That's enough doomscrolling for now. Have some flowers. #flowersofbluesky
On the highest hill for twelve miles around, through a beech wood and with the occasional ancient barrow mound around, at this time of year there are rare pasque flowers. Felt like a good morning to go and see them.
Props to the live feed author tagline people at the BBC website for this clarification. 😅 #ArtemisII
On the train to work this morning, I couldn't help but see what the guy sitting next to me sent his mate: "I think I'm sitting next to a homosexual" 😶
The Christmas cactus has unexpectedly flowered again (usually it's pretty bang-on around Christmas). So... Merry Christmas? I suppose? 🤷♂️ #flowersofbluesky
