#Mothweek day four. Silly but having grown up in suburban MD, I can’t look at an ironweed clearwing moth (Carmenta bassiformis) without being reminded of the DC football team colors. (photo from Decatur, June 2020). #bugsky #insects

Long cylindrical moth with a fringed tail, mostly clear wings with heavy veins spread to the sides, long black antennae with wide white bands. The moth is colored metallic burgundy with gold horizontal bands.

I hear it’s #MothWeek so here is one of the flashiest, Hemaris affinis aka Snowberry Clearwing aka “flying shrimp” on wild bergamot Monarda fistulosa. Last week at Greenwich CT Audubon Center. #insects #bugsky #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

Long furry moth with yellow, black, and orange bands and a fringed tail hovering vertically near a puffy pale pink flower. Moth has long antennae, a long thin tongue extending into the flower, and one wing visible, mostly transparent with thin veins and dark areas near the body.

Native bloom number 32, Clinopodium carolinianum, Georgia calamint or Georgia basil. Rather modest flowers, the plant seems quite tough in a dry patch of the yard. The leaves are aromatic, not sure if you can make Georgia pesto with them... #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

For #WaspWednesday a small crabronid (Ectemnius?) on Queen Anne’s Lace and an absolutely tiny thing with absurdly long antennae, which I didn’t even notice but was in my shot of a bee next to it. #bugsky #macrophotography

I hear it’s #dragonflyweek. Here’s a little blue dragonlet, Erythrodiplax miniscula from Sandhills WMA in April. (Adult males are blue, this is a female.) #bugsky #dragonflies

Magnificent beast for #flyfriday Tiger crane fly (genus Nephrotoma) in Copenhagen botanical garden a few weeks back. Was mating, will post the couple as a comment. I can't tell sex of these, is this the male or the female? #bugsky #flyday #diptera

Front part of fly with small head (orange with what looks like a rectangular beak protruding and a black triangle on top), antennae that are about 5 times the size of the head, thorax (black with orange stripes) about 3 times as long as the head, much longer body with yellow, orange and black markings, narrow wings folded over the body, and super long legs not fitting in the photo.

Native blooms 29, 30, and 31! Symphoricarpos orbiculatus (coralberry) flowers are tiny but will produce lovely pink berries, Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium) with buds currently closed, and hairy sunflower (Helianthus hirsutus). Hope to see some bees visiting these! #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

Returned home, found native blooms 27 and 28 have appeared in the yard. Stokes aster (Stokesia laevis) with a small carpenter bee (Ceratina) and blue vervain (Verbena hastata) with a Nearctic resin bee (Megachile, subgenus Chelostomoides). #nativeplants #bloomscrolling #bees #bugsky

Europe has an abundance of white-tailed bumble bee species with similar coloration, making ID challenging. Was lucky to catch one (in Flåm) showing off her distinguishing feature - a long tongue - which helped an expert on #iNaturalist to make the ID as Bombus hortorum. #bees #bugsky

I was a bit surprised to find ground-nesting bees above the Arctic Circle, but northern coastal Norway is a special place due to the North Atlantic Current. Andrena and Lasioglossum at the botanical garden in Tromsø last week. (Northernmost halictid record on #iNaturalist!) #bees #bugsky #insects
