Detroit, I am in you!

Have the right-wingers who insist that The Odyssey couldn't possibly have Black people in it (and who think "Medieval Europe" or "Roman Empire" means 100% white) ever looked at a map? People have been navigating these waters for over 10,000 years. That's not "woke." That's archaeology.

Signed into my old Daily Kos page to see if I still could, and learned that I am ancient in Internet years. I started ranting on Daily Kos in 2004, then drifted toward ranting on my Facebook, then Twitter, now here. I had a blog, but I wrote lovingly crafted essays there. Almost no ranting.

Had fun making this little mosaic block at an arts event at the Hammond Museum in Westchester, NY yesterday. Also made a cyanotype! All of this was new to me, but I’d like to try it again sometime soon.

Small square mosaic of stained glass, flat glass beads, and bits of broken ceramic. The long pieces point diagonally toward the upper right corner. Colors are mostly blues and greens, though and opalescent piece looks orange in this photo.

How much of your one wild and precious life have you spent flossing the metal fins of a baseboard heating vent with two twisted-together spiky pipe cleaners? None? I can only envy you.

While I use generative AI to help me with simple coding and other not-very-complicated professional tasks, I could never use it to create or plan anything. I think best with a pen or pencil in my hand.

One way to spend Sunday evening that is not really very much fun at all is to clean the pipe between the metal fins of a hot water baseboard system with a small wet paintbrush and a bristled pipe cleaner.

I'm working from home today, and for some reason, I couldn't get warm. We have a rarely-used fireplace (a woodstove made to look like a fireplace), but usually someone else builds the fires. I don't think I'd ever done it myself, but I did today! And now, I'm cozy! I’m basically a survivalist now.

I am excited and honored that @calyxpress.bsky.social has published my short story, “The Schools,” in its gorgeous 50th anniversary issue! This story is a chapter from the novel-in-stories I have been working on for quite a few years. Publication in CALYX has been a goal of mine for many years.

You have never been here at this liminal hour, when gray women cram the aisles, caught between their work and home selves at 5:40 PM. You're usually here in the convent quiet of ten AM, serene and showered, your cool blonde bob under control, after dropping the twins at high school in your workout clothes and then doing two strenuous hours in the gym. You pretend to hate the discipline, but you love the permission to be sweaty, red, ugly, powerful. On tennis days you glory in aggression and competition in the name of maintaining order in the chaotic female body. You are trim, as required; youthful, as expected.
If your husband is, in fact, sleeping with the intern he has referred to exactly twice too often, no one will whisper that it's because you let yourself go.
You move to a place like Alwyn Park for the schools. Everyone says to buy the worst house in the best district you can afford,
but your husband is senior vice president at a boutique investment bank, and you don't need to skimp. You bought a new house: chandeliered, granited, and water-featured. You know who has a walk-in humidor and wine cellar and poolhouse and who mows their own grass and scrubs their own toilets.
You all moved to Alwyn Park for the schools.

Normally you would be home at 5:40 pM, rattling off reminders about school and extracurricular activities to Connor and Morgan as they eat dinner at the peninsula, absorbed in their phones.
They are eighteen and still don't like their peas touching their potatoes.

Trying to learn a thing (darning) and mend a thing (torn linen sheet).

A small, metal darning loom is being
used to repair a large horizontal tear in a piece of off-white linen fabric.
The fabric is stretched tightly over a circular wooden disk, secured by a rubber band. Thin white threads (the warp) are hooked onto the loom’s metal teeth at the top and stretched vertically across the right side of the gap, anchored into the solid fabric below. The loom's metal hooks are lined up in a row.

For the holidays, I gave my gardener husband a four-shelf rack and some shop lights. Thursday, he planted some spring seeds, and they’re sprouting already! I dreamed about these seeds, then thought about them throughout the day. Couldn’t wait to get home and visit them.
