On 23 January 1923, Banting, Collip and Best were awarded U.S. patents on insulin and the method used to make it. They all sold these patents to the University of Toronto for $1 each. Banting famously said, “Insulin does not belong to me, it belongs to the world.” He wanted everyone who needed it to have access to it.

Political tensions between Canada and the U.S. contributed to the drop in travel in early 2025, following punishing tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and his repeated suggestions that Canada could become the 51st state. Meanwhile, heightened security at the border also discouraged many from travelling south.

Meanwhile, a survey from March 2026 suggested that one demographic group in Canada is embracing U.S. travel this year.

The 2026 Smart Traveller Survey, which was run by The Harris Poll in March on behalf of Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada (THIA), found that 45 per cent of Gen Z Canadians (born between 1997 and 2012) say they're likely to travel to the U.S. next year, compared to just 8 per cent of Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964).

Among Canadians who are travelling this year, nearly two‑thirds (61 per cent) of Gen Z respondents said the U.S. is on their itinerary, compared to 48 per cent of Millennials (born 1981-1996), 28 per cent of Gen X (1965-1980), and 14 per cent of Boomers.

That said, the survey also found that 36 per cent of Canadians are choosing domestic destinations over international travel, while Europe has overtaken the U.S. as the top international destination.

And though Gen Z said the biggest barriers to travel to the U.S. were cost (36 per cent) and a lack of paid time off (22 per cent), the majority of Boomers (51 per cent) cited political tensions as the biggest deterrent to cross-border travel.

There's truth to the message of the ad, even if its characters sit on the very edge of the uncanny valley. Food Banks Canada says their members have seen a doubling of demand since 2019, household debt is rising for all but the very well-off, mortgage delinquency is rising, GDP growth has been negative for two
quarters. The Conservatives argue this is all real, and there's no use caveating it - even though disposable income is actually rising across the board, unemployment is falling, and mortgage delinquency rates remain lower than a
decade ago. Whatever weight these real-world economic criticisms may have, however, are
distorted by the sleazy way the Conservatives chose to make them. Using the tools of an American AI company to generate realistic-looking depictions of hungry Canadians is grotesquely antihuman. It drags politics out
of the real world and into the dystopic world of generative AI.

Creating a pipeline of low-cost, high-volume advertising would thrust Canada into the kind of attack ad free-for-all which has corroded the United States'
democracy. That seems to the plan. The Conservatives are taking their cues from Spencer Pratt, a Republican-aligned candidate for mayor of Los Angeles who has taken Twitter by storm. He's spat out a deluge of AI generated slop ads, featuring the city on fire and the incumbent mayor made up to look like The Joker. (He, in turn, seems to be inspired by the deluge of AI-generated slop posted to
President Donald Trump's Truth Social page.) Despite being heralded as an innovator, voters clearly hated it. Pratt came in
distant third in this months' primary. Canadians, too, should spurn Poilievre's attempts to sink our political
discourse into a mean, stupid, disorienting game of holograms and unreality.
Say no to the slop.

Since World War II, the United States has guaranteed the safety of its allies in Europe — until Mr. Trump challenged them to take greater responsibility for their own security.

Above all, we should start to stigmatise X usage for what it really is: a small and selfish part in making the world measurably worse. You are not special.
You are not immune to fake news, delusion, anti-reality. You do not have a unique ability to maintain your critical faculties in an ecosystem where everyone else is losing theirs. Every minute you spend in the hot water boils you a little more. Ultimately, only by conscientiously refusing the lure of the algorithm can we start to fix all the ways in which it has broken us.

It is comforting to pine for guardrails, whether they are fashioned from paper, ideas or flesh. But constraining our leaders is not enough; the rest of us must be roused from the passivity that the very notion of guardrails might imply. The popular will is the most vital guardrail. We are not just arbiters of power, judging our leaders in elections and polls; and not just supplicants to power, hoping that our leaders will use it wisely and on our behalf. We also legitimize power; we exercise it.

Respecting a guardrail might mean staying in your lane. Becoming a guardrail means stepping out of it.
