My big kid has been volunteering this summer in a bird rehabilitation sanctuary in 🇨🇭. They are caring for 70+ baby swifts because they are too hot & falling from nests. It’s apparently extremely time consuming to feed them grasshoppers & grubs but definitely worth trying to save these amazing birds.

90% of the summer so far is opening and closing windows and shutters strategically at varying points of the days and nights to manage the crazy heat. Today, a little bat found shelter during the day between the wall & a wooden shutter so we let them stay there. #bat #heatwave

An afternoon yodeling in the heart of Geneva. Such fun to sing with this bunch of ladies! A delightful end of a long term, and such a fun contrast to my professional life.

Ten days of heat in Geneva, and then -- finally -- a cloud burst and a thunderstorm with some rain. I hope the hail didn't damage agricultural crops. If only this ice could be used to replenish our rapidly melting mountain glaciers. This summer is relentless: a mix of grief and fear for the future.

I didn’t try to! But I did end up with two vine leaves on my crotch which provided some amused giggles from my friends. Call me Eve!

A day-long cycle tour with two geographer friends to see closed borders, shut down for the G7 held in Evian, and think together about it all. Much heavier police and army presence than during the Covid closures.

The shops that decided later on to board up seem to be using the highest quality wood, presumably because the cheap stuff has run out locally. The quality of fresh pine boards folks are using is just heartbreaking. Can this get recycled somehow? Hey, can I have some to build some bookcases, please?

Tonight, many of the smaller border passage points in Geneva were sealed off, starting at 6pm, cement blocks and wire fences fixed across the roads. The fences are stronger, higher, more solid than during the Covid lockdowns. The workmen have a long night ahead of them. It is baffling & chilling.

Even our main university building seems to have joined the latest yellow craze! Isn’t this sending a rather ambiguous message about how it sees itself in the city? The whole situation reads like a self-fulfilling prophecy, everyone blaming different obscure forces as the expected cause of violence.

My city is confused.

My city is made of chipboard.

My city has tuned very odd. And very yellow.

As days pass, we are getting more news about how the region is preparing. It’s nuts. The main motorway around the city, including the passage point into 🇫🇷 but also all the sections only in 🇨🇭, will be closed & reserved for G7 vehicles. Shutting down a whole city so world elites can network. Yuck.

I saw THREE BABY LONG-EARED OWLS in the wild today, in the Canton of Geneva. I am happy. They were like wobbly & fluffy potatoes flopping around in a cedar tree trying to fly. Amazing. (Not my photo!)

The G7 will be organized in Evian 🇫🇷 but the🇨🇭city of Geneva has the main local airport & will (mostly unwillingly) host most of the demos. I've planned a few days of visual fieldwork as the international border passage points will be closed in many places from 12-18 June. Flashback to Covid lockdown?
