Today my brother John would have been 62 years old. He died in April 2022. Since he passed I have published a book of my old photographs of him and our family called "The Johnny Chronicles." And I have two solo shows of the images in the next few months, in Fresno and Los Angeles. 1/2

This is a vertical black and white photograph that was taken in 1973. The subject is my brother John Doherty, who was born with Down Syndrome in 1964. John is standing in his rain boots on an oil-stained driveway, holding a plastic screwdriver, with his hands hitching up his belt. He is looking directly into the camera, his face and shirt dirty from whatever he was doing before I took the photograph.

A few evenings ago in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. Apparently our safari vehicle was following a little too closely. This is the elephant equivalent of a Yosemite Sam “Back Off!” bumper sticker. We reached an open area about 60 yards up the road and they let us pass. #photography #elephants
