“G’mornin, Kram.” Giselle had a thick accent that reminded Mathius of Haltack, and yet it wasn’t quite the same. “We got in some o’ those fruit pastries that ye like. Who’s yer friend?”
“This is Mathius. He is a new member of the guild. Mathius, this is Giselle, our food attendant. If you’re nice to her, she saves the best snacks for you.”
“Don’t be givin’ away my secrets now, ye rascal!” the woman teasingly scolded him. “Pleasure ta meet ye, Mathius.”

“Just…” Jace took a moment to choose his words. “Someone of non-nobility. Someone they think is lesser than them.”
“Do you think the same thing?”
“If anything, I judge them for being nobles.” His eyes darkened a little. “No one is better than anyone else. Except me, obviously.”
Braelyn raised an eyebrow. “You must not have many friends if you honestly think that.”
He flashed her a cocky grin. “Yet I got you to come here with me.”
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop the smile that crossed her face. “Are we friends?”
“I’d like to be.” There was a soft honesty in his voice now. “I haven’t met many people like you, to be honest. Any time someone figures out what I’m capable of, they turn the other way.”
Her heart filled with sympathy. “I suppose I understand that, but still. I like to think there’s more to people than just what they do.”
“You’re a breath of fresh air,” Jace said smoothly, finishing his sweet bread.
