This mentality prevails, even within the services the city provides, by people providing the services. City trucks / police cruisers driving on park paths. Bikeshare trucks blocking Bikeways, pushing VRU into mixed traffic at night. Police cruisers parking on sidewalks to access coffee/restaurants.

This is SB Strachan South of E. Liberty, 11pm last night. They aren't carrying anything, they are wheeling bikes. There are 2 traffic lanes on E. Liberty with no bike lanes, park there. But even the Bikeshare company chooses to block a bike lane rather than block a motor vehicle lane. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Never understood how/why #BikeShareTO got away with illegally parking in bike lanes to do their work. Especially at night when there's only one lane for people cycling to merge into. Especially at intersections, on a hill, on a night with 2 nearby concerts letting out when there are other options.

This road& bikeway was neglected due to the number of condo developments. The road was cooked in 2021, but there's no sense in fixing a road until heavy construction is done. A few compromises were made from our original design, but one of the few remaining flex-bollard cycle tracks is now gone.

Important findings supporting why renewal work is just as important as new infrastructure. We don't often get to redesign a corridor, but adding a protected signal phase, better sightlines & separation, repainting & marking conflict zones at ambiguous crossings can ↘️ rider stress & improve safety.

I especially like that this is an official pathway. Walking directions send people here: there is a staircase to Wellington St & a break in the Wellington bikeway curbs to cross mid-block to access the badlands. Built specifically for condo dwellers who can't get a car share to go to Cheltenham.

It also depends on the goals. Toronto is not Montreal, on many many different levels. We can have both - suburbs, yes, but more to the most important destinations, to start. And more in the urban areas where demand is currently not being met. These images ars all right now.

On Clinton St, right now, besides the original brick base, you can also see how the roadway was expanded & city services added, with a concrete base. That concrete is likely also at least 100y old. The concrete & brick base on Clinton will be there for at least 20 more years after this re-paving

But the older and especially more affluent residential areas of the city were built with brick or concrete roads. Clinton street has had houses since the mid 1800s, residential roads in the annex are also concrete. Here's College Street in 1915 with the original streetcar tracks and brick road.

A quick engineering backgrounder on Toronto roads: There are 2 basic types of roads in Toronto - Composite & Flexible. Composite = asphalt over concrete, flexible = Asphalt over Granular material. The former being much stronger, more durable and expensive Most local/residential are flexible..

Many upgrades were done on Peter St over the past 12y, incl adding some separation - but not curbs b/c the condo construction wrecked the road and largely erased the bikeway. This road rebuild makes the bikeway permanent with concrete separation similar to Harbord Hoskin, Davenport and Wellington...

I was pleasantly surprised to see a driver pulled over for rolling through a stop sign. Nevermind that they told the driver to park on the sidewalk so other drivers could pass by - don't want to do anything to slow drivers down. There was an empty laneway directly opposite to pull into, but no.
