Montreal does urban design so well - this whole street is 'closed' to car traffic, but of course open to everyone else. Lovely walk.
OMG ... gmail is now giving me an AI 'summary' of my emails. This is worse than clippy. I'm perfectly capable of reading my own damn emails. Apparently, they've bundled it with features I *do* like (spellcheck for example) to discourage me from disabling it. Annoying as hell.
Was shopping for a bike lock today. Does not inspire confidence when even the store selling a lock warns you that it is "not designed to protect your bike from theft". 🫤

I just picked up an amazing honey cake from Sweet Patisserie in Westboro (Smirle Ave). Reminds me of a dessert I ate a long time ago when I was travelling. YUM!
Here, it would take almost 5 hours to drive from Paris to Strasbourg (not including traffic and breaks), but only an hour and 46 minutes by train. Ha ha … I know which method I would prefer!
Currently entertaining myself by seeing how much faster trains between two Europe cities are compared to driving. Here it would take almost 7 hours to drive, but less than 5 hours by train to get from Paris to Toulouse! Whoo hoo!
Why does this flight say that it has arrived when I happen to know it just left YYZ a few minutes ago?
Next book is "A.I. Snake Oil" which my son, who is studying computer science, bought me. We've had some interesting and thoughtful conversations about A.I. and the concept of progress so I'm curious what these authors think.
Kicking off 2026 with "At a loss for words" ... so far, it's engaging and disturbing at the same time. The lessons I'm learning is that we need to reclaim words and prevent the "other side" from defining important ideas.
When google translate makes such a stupid error (équipe is feminine so it should be “ma nouvelle équipe”), I get very nervous. Knowing whether a word is masculine or feminine is something that an AI translator should be good at.
It rained the whole time I was in BC (what else is new) except for a brief moment when the clouds parted and we got to walk on the pier.
Very weird experience at Lyon yesterday. Crowds of people and THIS sign. (No alarm btw). Everyone came down the stairs, looked at the sign, looked at everyone else not panicking, not evacuating, and just ... stayed. Are we lemmings?
Entirely baffled why these signs are STILL up on Vanier suggesting that one lane is closed. There are no closed lanes either North or South - not overnight, not sometimes, not at all! I don't know why this bothers me so much.
